"Jefferson, we need to talk." the previous king of Auradon said to the dark haired man. The two men sat in Jefferson's hat shop where the king consort of Arendelle spent most of his time.
Adam had traveled for three days to see the Wonderlandian. He figured Jefferson would be the best person to ask about the strange girl from the Isle. Elsa was far too busy running Arendelle and was much more secretive than her eccentric husband.
"Ah Adam, how are you my friend?" Jefferson asked as he fiddled with his pocket watch.
"Quite well, retirement suits me. But I needed to speak to you about something urgent." Adam responded.
"Urgent you say? Well don't keep me in suspense, whatever is it?" Jefferson questioned.
"There was an incident on the Isle a few days ago during VK Day. Hades attempted to escape." Adam said.
"Hades always was ambitious." Jefferson laughed.
"Yes, well fortunately he was stopped." Adam hesitated before continuing.
"I don't understand what is so urgent if he was stopped Adam. You're hiding something, spit it out." demanded Jefferson.
"He was stopped by a girl roughly seventeen years of age with hair as white as snow. According to Mal, this girl is known as The Queen of the Isle." Adam stared into the eyes of the man known as the Mad Hatter and watched as his face went blank at his words.
"What does this have to do with me Adam?" coldly questioned Jefferson.
"The girl's name is Mistake, Mistake Hatter." Adam answered.
Jefferson didn't respond. His mind was racing and he couldn't think straight. He didn't think anyone outside of the Isle would ever know of Mistake's existence. No one was ever supposed to know but he should have expected this to happen with the villain kids being brought to Auradon.
"Mistake is Grace's twin. She's older by three minutes." Jefferson finally said.
"Why is she on the Isle when her family is here Jefferson?" Adam asked.
"The girls were born during mine and Elsa's time on the Isle. Mistake, she was, she was so much like who we once were even as a baby. She reminded us of the people we were, the people who were bad enough to end up on an island full of villains. Grace however was the exact opposite. She reminded me of Alice and Elsa of Anna." Jefferson said quietly as he stared into the distance.
In his mind he could see the face of the daughter he had shunned and abandoned. The little girl who had only ever wanted him to show her the same love and affection he showed her sister.
"They were six when Elsa and I were pardoned. And when the time came for us to leave the Isle, we left Mistake there." finished Jefferson.
"You left your six year old child on The Isle of the Lost? Alone?" Adam questioned in disbelief and horror.
"At the time we believed it was for the best. Mistake possessed both my mother's magic and Elsa's powers. We thought that it was better for everyone if that magic was contained." Jefferson answered.
"How could you do that?" asked Adam
"The same way you could lock up all of the villains and punish their children for their parents crimes. Do not pretend to be better than me Adam when you have ruined more children's lives than I can count on both hands." Jefferson snapped back."I didn't try to intentionally hurt anyone but those who had done wrong. I admit that my plan was not the best and that my actions caused much more harm than I can begin to imagine. But what you and Elsa did is beyond comprehension. SHE WAS YOUR CHILD JEFFERSON!" Adam exclaimed.
"DO YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW THAT?! I KNOW WHAT I DID ADAM BEAST AND I THINK OF IT EVERY DAY OF MY MISERABLE LIFE!" roared Jefferson as stood from his chair and threw his pocket watch into the wall near him.
The two men stared each other down as their chests heaved with the force of their anger. The shop was silent for what felt like a century before Adam spoke again.
"Mistake is coming to Auradon. My son has personally invited her."
"What?" breathed Jefferson.
"Mal told us she was your daughter, but I wanted to confirm it with you. And if I'm being honest Jefferson, I wish I didn't because the truth was so much worse than I could have imagined." sighed Adam.
Jefferson said nothing. There was nothing he could say.
"I would advise staying away from Auradon Prep for a while and perhaps bringing Grace home for a short time. If Mistake was powerful enough to stop the Lord of the Underworld, who knows what she'll do to the family who abandoned her." Adam warned as he stood to take his leave.
Jefferson remained silent as Adam left. Slowly, he tore his eyes away from the chair Adam had sat in and began to make his way to the now broken pocket watch. He lifted the item and opened it.
Inside was an old and worn photo of a girl no older than three. Her hair was white as snow and her eyes the iciest of blues. It was the only photo Jefferson had of his youngest daughter and as he stared into the bright eyes of the child he failed, the king began to sob.
