Chapter Three

Ella sat atop the closed toilet seat, her leg bouncing nervously. The three pregnancy tests, the ones that came together in the box, all lay face down on the counter. Her phone sat next to them face up and open on her clock app, counting down from ten minutes.

She could faintly hear Lucifer playing 'Heart and Soul' on the piano, and she smiled slightly. But the happy flutter in her chest dissipated as soon as it came as the intrusive thoughts crept in again.

He's gonna leave you

You'll be a single working mom

You won't even be a good enough mom

You can't afford a child

But it's inhumane to abort it

I could just give them up for adoption

But they could find you

They'll hate you

Think about how Chloe and Lucifer would look at you

They'd be so disappointed in you

You should be ashamed of yourself

You should have remembered your birth control, then you wouldn't be in this situation

It's all your fault

She squeezed her eyes shut, gripping her hair on the sides of her head with deadly force, as she tried blocking the thoughts out. Carol wouldn't leave her, he's a good man, she shouldn't doubt him.

How do you think your church will react? A bastard child born out of wedlock

She shook her head, as if the action would shoo the thought away.

It's all your fault, you should've remembered to take your birth control

She jumped slightly as her timer went off. She exhaled sharply. She'd just figure out what to do after seeing the tests.

She got up and slowly made her way to the counter. The timer rang loudly in her ears, the tone echoing in her head. She clicked the stop button, the silence suddenly suffocating. She gulped nervously, picking one up and flipping it over. Suddenly, it felt like all the air was sucked from her lungs, her breath caught in her throat, the tears already pooling in her glossy eyes.

Positive

She huffed and flipped another one over, praying it was negative.

Positive

She grunted frustratedly as she flipped the last one over.

Positive

She felt her heart drop to her stomach, she felt sick. She didn't know how she'd tell Carol, or how she'd manage to be a good mother. She didn't exactly have the best upbringing or the best influences.

She could already feel the hot tears pooling behind her eyelids. She squeezed her eyes shut tighter, willing them to recede but they came flowing out and cascading down her cheeks before she could stop them.

She let out an involuntary sob. Her knees felt too weak, and she collapsed onto the pristine tile floors, holding her hand over her mouth to quiet the sobs as she clutched her stomach.

Knock knock knock

"Ella?" She heard Lucifer's tentative voice as it filtered through the thick door.

She suddenly heard the silence. No piano played in the background anymore, just the sounds of her fear.

Knock knock knock
