"Please Rae you have to come tonight!"

I look up from my book and smile at Kate's persistence.

"I already told you no! My parents would kill me, we have school tomorrow, and honestly I just want to hang out at home tonight." I give her a pleading look, hoping she understands my desire to be a lazy, anti-social teenager just for one night.

Kate pouts at my response and flops down beside me on my bed, burying her face in my pillow as her blonde curl sprawl about her head.

"Please babe!" she mumble into the fabric. "Everyone is going! It's in the woods, and it's to celebrate the beginning of senior year, and it is going to be so much fun, and you are going to regret not going when everyone goes into school tomorrow talking about it." She turns around and looks up at me. "It is just for one night, then you can go back to hiding under your rock. I promise."

I laugh at her attempted puppy eyes, but we both know I am going to give in.

"Ugh!" I grunt. "Fine! I will go to this stupid party, but you owe me! And you need to help me get ready," I give her a serious glare showing my discontent with the situation, but we both know I don't mean it.

Kate leaps at me and throws her arms around my neck, trapping me in one her suffocating hugs.

"Thank you babe! You won't regret this, and I am so happy you are going because honestly I am too afraid to go alone."

I laugh again and return her hug, whispering "I know."

"This is so cool!" Kate yells over the pulsing music.

All around us teenagers were stumbling, and laughing, and gathering around the bonfire. Somebody set up a bunch of speakers so the music was practically shaking the ground, and some college boys were handing out beer.

"Ya super cool!" I yell back sarcastically.

Kate frowns at my attitude. "Don't be like that. Have a drink. Enjoy yourself! Something great could happen tonight. Look, all the guys are checking us out!"

I laugh at her optimism. "That's because you dressed us up like a couple hookers. No complaints. I know we both look sexy, but nonetheless like hookers."

Kate smiles again before pushing up her boobs and sending her flirt eyes over to the football team. Kate has always been this way. Shameless of who she is. Optimistic to a fault, and able to make everyone around her smile and laugh. We had only been friends a few months, but it felt like years. We worked at the beach together over the summer as lifeguards, and just hit it off. My calm balanced her chaos, and vice versa.

"You know you're kind of a slut," I tease her as the quarter back begins walking over to us. The girls around us shake their heads at Kate's behavior.

"I know," she flips her hair back with confidence. "I like men, and I am not going to apologize for it. If I were a man nobody would care how slutty I was. It's all just a stupid sexist social construct, and I am not going to stand for it."

I put my hands up in surrender. "Hey no judgment here! Just...just be careful. Alright?"

Kate smiles again, a mischievous secretive smile. "What's the fun in that?"

With those words she strutted up to the quarterback and kissed him with a passion only she possessed.

I laughed again and joined the party.
