In Tyre, some Brothers Hospitalliers of Saint John who knew the secrets of healing took care of me and cured me from my fever and battle wounds. Within two weeks' time I was fully recovered and eagerly awaited the day I could ride a horse again.

During my stay at the hospice I was informed that more than fifteen thousand crusaders had died in the Battle of Hattin. Most of the Templars and St. John's Knights were beheaded following our defeat. Unfortunately, more than two thousand—mainly infantry—crusaders defected. Of those remaining, only the ones that could pay the extortionate ransom Saladin requested were left to walk free, our commander among them.

Our king, Guy of Lusignan, was kept prisoner and the Muslim caravans' pillager –and root of all evil-Raynald, was beheaded by Saladin himself as an example for all others. The rest of men were dragged chained to the slave markets of the east, all except a few who conceded and renounced their faith.

The crusaders, whose sacred goal was to win a place within the Kingdom of Heavens ended up like lambs to the slaughter...
