AUTHOR'S POV

upper manhattan,
new york city.

"are you planning on getting ready anytime soon?" came a tired voice from the guest room, "i really don't have the energy to run through the terminals yet again like last time, ezra."

i turn my face to look at adina who now stood by the sofa behind me, with a cup of what looked like steaming hot coffee, most probably with five packets of sugar stirred in.

"five more minutes, yaar! let him reach his 50 at least! test debut hain na, i've too see it," came my reply which was mixed with the boisterous sound echoing from the TV.

another beautiful flick shot of him, one of his classic shots since early days, led the ball to a smooth boundary. just four runs short of a maiden test-fifty.

c'mon, dev!

"for a man whom you introduced to me as the guy who broke your heart, you seem kaafi excited to see him thrive?" adina asked - curiosity laced in her voice.

as i was about to reply, the sounds of the stadium echoed around my condominium. the wankhede crowd yelled out their praise with the occasional indian flag waving around - the commentator, harsha bhogle, took great pride in applauding the young lad who reached his maiden test fifty in just 30 balls.

"that's a proper cricket shot and he makes no mistake. what a way to bring up your maiden fifty in the longest format of the game! a beautiful boundary right of the bat. even more lovely when it is at the iconic wankhede stadium. devdutt padikkal will now, most probably, look on reaching the triple-figure mark."

"good cricket all around but now it is time for a short drinks break. let's see what the rahul-padikkal duo has to offer combined with the spectacular bowling efforts from the aussies."

i looked on as he raised his bat to the roaring crowd which more or less looked like a blue ocean, with the indian jersey being donned on almost every spectator. playing the series on home ground gave them incredible crowd support. kl rahul gave him a fleeting hug and a slight pat on the head as they met in the middle of the pitch, whispering something into his ears which seemed to charge him up even more.

it was at this moment that i realised that he has gotten to a point which he always dreamt of. the dreams of standing on the 22 yards while proudly donning the indian jersey, playing for his country.
