"This year, I will be assigning your partners for the year," Professor Slughorn says, causing everyone to groan. "First off, I have Mr. Pettigrew with Mr. Crouch.
The rest of our group laughs at Peter because it can't get much worse than his situation.
"Hey, we can't judge a book by its cover" Peter defends.
"Yeah, unless the cover has Barty Crouch Jr. on it. The man's a psychopath!" James exclaims.
"We'll see" Peter responds.
"Next up," Slughorn continues. "I have Ms. Evans and Mr. Snape."
"Oh hell no," James says, going stoic. "Professor, I would like to work with Lily instead! She feels uncomfortable with this pairing."
Snape turns bright red, and Lily looks down at the floor.
"I'll consider it," Slughorn announces. "In the meantime, Mr. Snape will work with Mr. Lupin."
Remus shrugs, seeming not to care.
"I can speak for myself, James" Lily mutters.
"I know, Lil, I'm sorry. I just want to spend time with you" James responds. Lily turns away from him, but I can tell she's hiding a smile.
"Then, Ms. Claire and Mr. Black," Slughorn says.
"All right!" Sirius exclaims, going to give me a high-five.
"Regulus Black, that is" the professor interrupts. "Sirius, you will be with Ms. Meadowes."
"Oops," Sirius whispers to me. "Dorcas is cool. As for your partner... good luck."
I look over to Regulus who raises his eyebrows as if to say This was all you, and quickly turn back. As Slughorn goes through the rest of his list, I can't help but think to myself; what have I done?

"Where have you been?" Sirius asks as I walk into the common room 30 minutes after potions class ended.
"She already told us, she had to plan her tutoring schedule with Slughorn. Duh," Peter says.
"For half an hour?" Sirius interrogates.
"Sorry, Dad" I tease "Ran into Theo Nott again, of course."
"Ugh, no. That boy needs to take a hint!" Lily groans.
"I know. The problem is that if his personality wasn't so absolutely horrid, he'd be quite the catch" I observe
"He's so cocky that he probably thinks you've just been playing hard to get for the last 4 years," James says.
"I swear to god, what did he do?" Sirius demands.
"You're so overprotective, calm down" I tease.
"For real, Sirius. You're not dating Kaia, you know" Remus interjects, defensively.
"Yeah, right. I'm more like his surrogate 4th-year sibling" I say and we all laugh.
"Just be careful with that one, alright?" Sirius sighs.
"You act like I'm not ten times smarter than you," I respond "But okay."
"Seriously," James remarks. "I think I'm more scared of Kaia than I am of any Slytherin. You're like a dictionary for spells, Kai."
"Me, too" Lily adds. "Remember in your first year when you knocked out that 7th-year Lucius Malfoy for saying the m-word?"
"And I didn't even get any repercussions for it!" I laugh. "He was too embarrassed to tell anyone he got in a fight with an 11-year-old girl... and lost."
