It was another fine day in Taguig. The sky was a fine shade mix of blue and gray with clouds were as puffs of radiant joy. As the car passes through buildings that grow into the sky, made up of numerous strands of steel and glass that grew together and parted like stems of a plant. It was a vertical city.As she looks outside the car window, the view in front of her eyes changes from buildings to a bunch of old roughly constructed houses and junk shops made out of corrugated iron, cardboard, and other materials they can find to create shelter.
Children wearing colorful sando and shorts running around with smiles on their faces. While their mothers working in their own little stores selling food and their fathers carrying collected garbage and loading trucks for delivery. She smiled at the people in front of her eyes. "I wonder how they're doing," she said as the thought of her parents back in Batangas.
Half of her body launches forward then back as she felt the car stop. "Nandito na po tayo," says the taxi driver as he looks at the rearview mirror. She thank and pays the driver with a couple of Peso bills then got out of the car. The taxi moves past behind her ready to pick up their next customer. She felt a gush of wind from behind, making her dark brown hair sway. Her eyes were directed at the huge building in front of her with a butterfly colored in red and white on the top center. Placing her right hand on the left side of her chest as she closes her eyes and takes a deep breath with a determined look.
"Let's do our best, Xyrene Rosario," she tells herself, then enters through the wide welcoming doors of her dream college, Taguig Monarch.
