"Devon, could you send me the rough drafts from the interns?" I peek into her office. She stands up quickly, shuffling through a pile of papers on her desk.
"Yesssss I can," she pulls out three files labeled with the names of the young high school interns. I smile at her and nod my head.
"You're a big help," I take the files and hold them up. She nods, sitting back down with a frown on her face. I turn my head, confused.
God damn it. Does everyone know I'm leaving already?
I already know how bad it sounds that I just arrived here and I'm already transferring. If they knew though, they'd all be just as terrified. I sigh, leaving to head back to my office.
The rest of the day I read over some of the short stories the interns have written. They're good, really good. Wattpad stories, though. Simple, fast burns, mafia writes. I need something original, and every other story on wattpad is about the girl who falls for the dangerous man with dark hair and a "husky voice".
Really? My phone rings, breaking the silence in the office and making me practically jump from my seat. I grab my phone and sigh, answering.
"What do you think I should wear to the club tonight?" I groan, rubbing my face.
"What are you talking about?"
"The new club opening tonight? Where have you been?" she scoffs.
"Lani, we can't go to that. It's 21 and over. Last I checked, we're both 20." She giggles, her laugh growing louder each second.
"You underestimate my power on the men of New York. Which club have we tried and failed to get into, Evelyn? Give me an example." I rub my face, standing up and facing out the window.
"I don't feel like going out tonight." She goes silent, staying mute for a full minute.
"You're kidding me right?"
"Lani, you have no idea how much I want to curl up into a ball in my bed and binge watch Ozark. It's not a good night," I explain. She sighs, knowing well enough if I don't want to go out, my mind won't be changed.
"Alright. Fine. I'll get everything ready for a quiet night. Are you off work yet?" I turn to the clock hanging above the door. 8:30pm.There aren't any people here? Did everyone really leave me here alone? I'm the new girl, people! The fuck is up with that?
"Actually yeah, I'm done..... Shit, I didn't bring my car," I groan.
"Just take a taxi," Lani suggests.
"You think there are going to be taxis' around here when half the club goers are going to need transport to the club?" She chuckles.
"You blow my mind." I smile, collecting all my stuff.
"Yeah well hopefully I have all my tos by the time I get home," I joke. She scoffs.
"Evelyn, don't make fun of those with only four toes." I chuckle.
"I'm not! I'm just saying I'm gonna walk through a shady ass area looking like a schoolgirl. Recipe for what exactly?"
"Disaster," she mumbles.
"Exactly."
"Alright, alright. I'll see you when you get here, alright?" I pull out my earbuds, holding my phone to my shoulder.
"Yeah, make sure you save some wine for me," I demand. She scoffs.
"Not likely... Please be safe."
"Always." I hang up then slip my earbuds into my ears. It's not a short walk, but music makes the quiet and creepy ass streets a little less terrifying. I slip my coat on then turn the lights in the office off. I lock the doors then go down the elevator.
