Gracie woke to the sound of rocks hitting a window. But not her window. It was Gabby's. She looked at her clock on the wall. It was 1:00 in the morning. The party was long over now. She quietly pulled the covers off of her and tiptoed to Gabby's room. She peered through the doorway into her room. Gabby didn't notice and opened up her window next to her next window seat. A boy stepped in, it was Nathan, the gardner.
"Hey." He said to Gabby. He looked right into her eyes.
"Shh!" She giggled. "You could get us in trouble!" She grabbed his hand and pulled him over to the couch in her room.
"What're you doing here?" She asked.
"I thought that since I couldn't come to your birthday party, I might as well sneak in and visit you." He smiled.
Gracie watched carefully. They didn't notice her.
Gabby grinned up at him. Nathan felt into his jean pocket that were covered with dirt from the gardens.
"I got you something." He whispered.
Gabby took it and their hands touched. She began to unravel the rainbow ribbon on the box. She took off the top of it, and she pulled out a bracelet with purple rhinestones all over it.
"Sorry, being a gardner, it was all I could really afford..." He said.
"Are you kidding? I love it! Thank you so much!" She exclaimed. She pulled him close and kissed his cheek. He blushed and smiled right at her. They both looked down, feeling embarrassed. Gracie shifted her weight on to the other foot. She scooted more away from the door. She did not want them to see her at all.
"I'm glad you like it." Nathan said. He looked down at his wristwatch.
"Oh, I probably should be going." He said, standing up. Gabby stood too.
"Oh, alright. Thanks for the gift. I really love it." She held up her new piece of jewelry. Nathan walked to the door and carefully opened the window. He placed one of his feet outside the window. Gabby waved and walked back to her bed. Suddenly, before Nathan was about to put his other foot outside, he stops and comes back in. He walks over and grabs Gabby's hand and she spinned to him. He leaned in so close that their noses touched. His hand slowly reached up and touched her face. He leaned in even closer and kissed her on the lips. They kissed for a while. Gracie was getting bored with watching them. Finally, they pulled away from each other and stared. He smiles.
"Well, goodnight." He kisses her on the forehead. He then went out the window again.
"Bye!" She called to him. She covered her mouth, she had realized she was too loud. She closed her window quietly and ran to her bed. She jumped up and down.
"My first kiss! My first kiss! Ahhh!!" She mouthed because she couldn't be loud or else she'd wake up the rest of the palace and get the attention of the guards. Gracie watched, and giggled. She decided to run back to her room. She thought about she could be queen. Queen is crowned at 16! She could picture the headlines. She laid on her bed and smiled. She was happy for Gabby. She didn't really have many more friends other Nathan. The twins were homeschooled and rarely left the palace except for the occasional walk outside with guards to protect them. Gracie's best friend was Valerie, one of the chef's daughters. But they never saw each other except for special occasions. They had met at a party many years ago for the opening of the new addition to the castle. They started to roll down the stairs in their dresses, laughing. The last time they saw each other was seven years ago, for a wedding in London for Charlie's son. Gracie missed Valerie. She wished she was there to laugh with.
