Last Few Days of Summer

The sun blinds my eyes as it shines through the white curtains of the balcony door. I yawn and reach under my pillow in search of my phone, Im surprised to see that it's only 8 in the morning. Swiftly I get up and make my way to the bathroom to take a shower. I comb my long brown hair and moisturize my skin. Walking to my closet I search for an outfit to wear, since it's been hot as it has always been in Southern California, I settle for a pair of denim shorts and loose white tank. After making my bed I head downstairs to find Zach, my twin brother, munching on some cereal. Grabbing a bowl, I sit on the high chair next to him at the kitchen bar and proceed to do the same.

"I'm surprised you're up this early," I remark while scrolling through my Twitter feed on my phone.

He shrugs but doesn't respond. I poke him on his side but he just slaps my hand away.

"Couldn't get much sleep, I've been nervous about this upcoming football season," he states rather grimly.

Zach is the star quarterback at our high school, Rich Wood. The teachers love him as well as the coaches there. There's not a person at Rich Wood that doesn't know who Zach Dubois is. He's not like most guys, and I'm not saying that because he's my twin brother. He cares about everyone at the school. There's a reason why teachers love him, apart from exceeding at sports he also manages to be a straight A student. Our group of friends adore him, and mom and dad are pretty much proud of him.

"It's going to be ok, you and the boys have been working your butts off this whole summer at football camp! Even coach thinks this is the best the team has been playing in decades!" I say to try and ease his nerves.

He looks over at me with the hazel eyes we both share and smirks. He reaches out with his hand and messes up my hair.

"Hey! What's that for?!" I shriek while trying to smooth out my wavy brown hair, "I'm here trying to make you feel better and this is what I get?! Remind me to never try to cheer you up ever again."

Chuckling he takes both of our bowls and puts them in the sink to wash.

"Don't blame me, I didn't start with the questioning and the poking!" He says through his grin.

Sticking my tongue out to him I make my way to the pantry to get Tucker's food out. Tucker is our Siberian Husky, we've had him since Zach and I were newborns. Tucker runs to his food bowl in anticipation of the food. I haven't even started pouring it yet and he already has his head close to the bowl ready to gnaw on his food.

Once I'm done I make my way to the living room and lay on the hanging hammock that we have in there. Our house is very much bohemian. Blame our parents for still reminiscing on their hippy Brazilian years. They met there when they were 21 while mom was studying abroad. She fell immediately in love with dad who was native to Rio de Janeiro. The house reflects their Brazilian lifestyle, we have hammocks everywhere in the house, even out on our deck. We have tapestry in most of the rooms in our house that have all kinds of interesting designs on them. The living room is a beige color with a big sofa that can fit up to 12 people in the center, in front of it is a coffee table with bohemian decorations. On the wall in front of the sofa hangs a flat screen tv on which I'm currently watching Netflix. The hammock I'm laying on is placed parallel to the glass walls that we have looking out onto the deck in our backyard. The pool is glistening in the sunshine. My phone vibrates, looking at the screen I smile as I open the text that my friend Mia has sent me.

Wanna go to the pier for lunch? -Mia

Sure! Want me to pick you up? -Ronnie

Sounds like a plan! Text me when you're on your way! -Mia

Alright see you then!  -Ronnie

I watch three more episodes of "One Tree Hill" before grabbing the keys to my Jeep Wrangler and heading out. I plug in my phone and blast "Sugar" by Maroon5 before sending a quick text to Mia letting her know that I'm on my way.

Mia and I have been best friends since preschool. We pretty much knew we were meant to be best friends when we both ended up siting next to each other during snack time and had the same exact snack (Pineapple slices and chocolate covered apples). We've been inseparable since then.

Pulling up to the two story high house I honk my horn letting her know I'm here. Our houses are five minutes from each other so it didn't take me that long. I see her as she locks her house door. I notice she's wearing Nike shorts and a baby blue workout tank, her blonde hair is pulled to a tight ponytail. She's always been the sporty one, not that I'm not into working out and sports but she's always loved it. We've been in the school's swim team since freshman year but have been swimming since we were 8 at the country club's swim team.

"I'm starving let's go!" She says as she closes the car door and beams at me with her blue eyes.

I pull out of the driveway while we both belt out the lyrics to "Uptown Funk".

When we finish our burgers and wait for the check, Mia starts to talk about this upcoming school year.

"Can you believe we're seniors?!" She says through a bright smile, "finally leaders of the school!"

"It's hard to believe that time has gone by so quick..." I respond. Suddenly all of the memories from high school flash through my mind. All of the great times and the not so great times. No matter what, they're memories that I'll never forget.

"I know. But hey! We've got this year to enjoy!" She says trying to cheer me up.

I smile back at her and pay for our food. We make our way out of the restaurant and head to Surf Frenzy, the surf shop at which our best friend Daniel works at. We go in and see him bagging some stuff for a customer. He looks up and smile as us as he's finishing the transaction.

"What're you guys up to?" He asks giving us his boyish smile.

"We were hungry so we went to eat at Burger Mania, and here we are! But I really gotta pee so I'll be right back!" Mia says as she rushes to the bathroom.

"TMI!!" Yells Daniel after her with a sourly look on his face.

I laugh and jump on the counter and sit while watching him fold board shorts. We met Daniel on the first day of swim practice at Rich Wood. Like the rest of the team we've all grown pretty close. We always hang at each other's house and do everything together, from sitting at lunch to having pretty much the same exact schedule every year.

"So are you going to the bonfire party tonight?" He asks while putting away some inventory.

The end of the summer bonfire is a tradition for all of the upcoming seniors at Rich Wood. It is a great way to say goodbye to summer and say hello to the new school year.

Excitedly I reply, "Wouldn't miss it! Are you?"

"Of course! I'm glad Stanley let me get off early today. He's been pretty strict with the other workers lately but I've always been on my game when it comes to work so I guess it pays off." He replies as he sits next to me on the counter. He rubs a hand through his silky brown hair and winks at me with his sparkly green eyes.

"Okay you guys really need to put some toilet paper and hand-soap in the girl's restroom, " says Mia as she comes out from the hallway that leads to the restrooms.

"I'll tell Bailey to once she gets back from break." A family comes in as he's speaking which is our cue to leave. "I'll see you guys tonight at the bonfire!"

"See ya then Dan!" Mia and I both reply as we step out into the warm California air.

We head down to the shops to find something cute to wear to the bonfire.
