"Should we tell your mom?" Zoe asked.
"No, she'll think we are just joking around or something," I responded.
"Ok." We finished spraying the sunscreen on. As we were waiting for it to sink in, we laid out our towels and made sure we had everything. Whenever Zoe and I get out of the pool we always sun tan instead of drying off, it's much more relaxing. Five minutes later the sunscreen had sunk in. I went to the pool thermometer and made sure the pool was at the correct temperature. It was a gorgeous sunny day and about 85 degrees out.
"On three. 1," we grabbed hands, "2," we stepped back to get a running start, "3!" we ran forward and plunged into the water. We came up for air and started cracking up. Then all of the sudden I got a weird tingly sensation in my legs. It was almost the same feeling that I get when my legs fall asleep, but they weren't. It spread slowly up my body. By the look on Zoe's face, I could tell she felt the same thing. All of the sudden Zoe's bikini top changed to a pink and purple, halter bikini top. It looked like it had scales on it. I looked at mine and it was the same as Zoe's, but in aqua, blue and green. Then, my legs weren't legs anymore...they had turned into a fish tail! I looked at Zoe's legs and the same thing happened to her! I had a tail that was the same color as my top. It had tons of scales that reflected the suns light to create a rainbow of colors.
"What's going on?!" I screamed. All of the sudden I started sinking. The tail had to be at least 30lbs. Lucky for me I was a strong swimmer. I started to do a dolphin kick and made it back to the surface. I swam over to the seat and Zoe was close behind me.
"What is happening to us?" Zoe asked.
"I don't know. All of these weird things have been happening ever since the pool warmed up last night."
"Maybe it's just the pool." We dragged ourselves out of the pool and onto the patio. I don't know what we were expecting, but the tails stayed just as they were. Am I a mermaid? I thought to myself. I had watched tons of shows about girls turning into mermaids, but I never thought it could happen to me. Then I thought back to a show I had watched last summer. When they were dry the tails would go away. I grabbed my towel and Zoe did the same. We quickly dried ourselves off and the same tingly feeling happened, but this time our legs came back.
"What if that happens every time we touch water?" Zoe's voice was concerned because she was on the swim team.
"Maybe it's just my pool," I replied trying to calm her down. We ran inside and went to the faucet. I called for my mom, but she didn't respond. That meant that she was probably in the shower. I turned the water on and reluctantly put my hand under the warm water. I felt the feeling and new immediately that it wasn't going to be just my pool. I fell to the ground with my tail back.
"Oh no. This can't be happening," Zoe said as she began pacing. She hadn't touched the water so she still had her legs. I grabbed my towel, that I had brought in, and dried myself off. When my legs came back I walked over to Zoe and told her to calm down.
"It's going to be ok," I said, even though I didn't believe it myself. "Think of all the good things that could come out if this. We can probably breath under water or hold our breath for a really long time. We can probably also swim really fast and really far."
"But what about swimming. I've been practicing for nationals forever. And I finally made it this year." I saw her eyes tearing up as she thought about it.
"We will figure this out," I promised.
