Jack didn't think his day could get any worse.
It was annoying enough to have to scout the farthest outpost from his colony— being stuck in those lightweight claustrophobic pods with one or two other comrades was never a fun experience— but he could admit that he had initially been intrigued by the alert for activity. The only problem with this notification, however, was that it had been moving fast, and steadily at that, so it was far stranger and more dangerous than a meteor.
"What in Cosmos is that?" The currenter Jack had been assigned with, Nate, was leaning forward as he stared out the window with wide eyes.
"I have no idea," Jack admitted, albeit with a shaky voice. How could he not? The object before them was humongous, and it blocked out what little light there was from the nearest star. "C-can you fly us closer, or—?"
"No way!" The currenter's tail beside the chair shivered, despite still being plugged in to the pod to maintain its energy. "We have to report this, immediately." Jack nodded and tore his eyes away from the window, pushing down on a large button.
"Central Nest, this is Jack and Nate in Pod 16, come in." He waited for a response, but his brow slowly knitted together when all he heard was static. "Central Nest," he tried again, "This is Pod 16, please come in!" When he still received no response, Jack's own tail lashed as he sighed and looked back to his comrade. "The energy is dirtied up again."
"Lemme see." Nate groaned as he climbed out of the driver's chair, taking only a couple steps before he reached for the button and tried it himself. "Central Nest, this is currenter Nathan Sharp, are you hearing this message?" Jack looked back to the ship as their radio continued to hiss in the background. "We can't hear if you're getting this, but there's a massive unidentifiable object at Outpost 5," Nate continued, "Is anyone getting this?" Then he scowled verbally, taking a pause for his tail to spark with electricity. Jack quickly leaned away and ended up stumbling into the seat's arms, glancing back at the currenter before turning head to let him do his job.
"Can anyone hear me?" Nate called, trying once more. Instead of static, the radio suddenly clicked before letting out a loud, low-pitched noise, making both creatures wince and cover their ears until it finally stopped.
"What was that!?" Jack exclaimed, rubbing his poor sensitive little lugholes.
"I don't know. I don't know why the energy isn't cleaning up either."
"No kidding." Jack tried to get comfier in the seat, only to pale when he looked back out the window again. "Um... N-Nate?"
"Now what?"
"Th-th-the-the thing, it-it's—!" Jack only had a second after Nate yelped before he felt the currenter dive for the controls. Momentum slung them as the little pod dived to the side, rolling out of the way just before the huge metal object could barrel into them. Jack heard someone scream— oh wait, that was his voice— as they rattled against the walls of the confined pod, still spinning; he'd lost all sense of direction and permeance, but the bone-shuddering bang! of slamming into screeching metal was unmistakable.
"Rot!" Nate cursed, trying to push back up and regain control of the- well, controls. But despite his efforts, they hit something again— and this time, it was the fragile sound of glass.
Jack was jolted forward, tumbling as he was immediately blinded by a brilliant glare, no matter which way he faced. He felt air for a second longer before finally colliding with solid ground, which felt cold beneath his body as he rolled to a halt. It took him a few efforts before he could finally gasp in a breath, shuddering as his senses tried to catch up with the violent landing.
But wherever he was shined so bright that he couldn't even see, and no later did he try to open his eyes than a red blaring light shift the whole world, and an alarm was blaring into his very skull. Jack cried out and curled up into a ball, covering his ears, but the sound was so loud! He couldn't bring himself to move, until he felt hands grabbing at his upper arms and dragging him to his feet. He blindly complied, stumbling after who he soon realized was his comrade.
Jack could feel vibrations getting louder beneath his feet. Could metal experience a land-shake? Where were they!?
He couldn't make out Nate calling to him, but he could scarcely make out the movement of his lips in the angry red glow. The currenter suddenly halted, however, grabbing Jack and tugging him behind a— what was that? It was green like a plant, but nothing Jack had ever seen, and it was trapped in something hard that firmly gripped the soil around the roots. Did the poor thing even have roots?
But as his senses were slowly coming back to him, movement in the distance caught Jack's attention. Well, at first he thought it was just the disorientation, but he quickly realized something was amiss beyond his perception. Rapidly approaching were massive, bipedal creatures with round bubbled heads, but they were all dark blue and carrying... Something. They each held sticks of sort, but they were all so big that Jack realized the land-shake was actually from their very footsteps. They moved urgently; one held something to its round shiny head, booming sounds similar to what they heard on the radio, but with syllables more comprehensible, mimicable noises shouted over the alarm. It was likely calling for even more of their kind, probably to find them and— what was a "Pat-rick"?
Jack's jaw was still open with horror as he struggled to register the strange beasts before them, but Nate held a firm hand over his mouth. Thankfully, the scream that had been close to forming died back down, and they waited as still as stone until the giant creatures stomped past.
"This way," Nate called over the deafening alarm, turning to keep leading the way. Jack staggered after him, blinking as he kept his hands over his ears, only to suddenly let out an alarmed noise of his own.
"Nate, y-yer tail!" The currenter's tail wasn't its soft fluff-tipped gray-brown; it was sooty and spiked up, bent out of shape. A part of the connector from the pod was still snagged tightly around where these creatures' form of electricity could be produced from, which was the precious tuft at the end of a currenter's tail.
Jack was so flabbergasted to see the delicate appendage dragging so painfully in front of him, but Nate stopped limping to look back at him.
"I know, it's bad," he grunted, "I got caught on the pod when it crashed into that window wall; I landed on parts of the control panel too. But we need to keep moving, okay? Whatever these rotting creatures are, I think this is their pod, so we need to find a place to hide, lay low until we can get out of here."
