prologue - second love

——

4 years later

i huffed and twirled my spaghetti around my fork as the man across from me continued to talk about himself. his arms waived every which way as i stared at him with a bored look on my face. this entire date has been about him, he hasn't even asked me one thing about myself.

over the past four years, i can't even tell you how many first dates i've been on. its been way, way too many. no one just ever seemed right for me. none of them could ever compare to her.

she asked me about my day on dates. she listened when i spoke. she let me speak. they did not.

i placed the fork down and rolled my eyes subtly so he didn't see. then, by the grace of god, my phone pinged. the man stopped and i looked at him to apologize, even if i wasn't sorry.

i fished my phone out of my purse to see who was texting me, and it was victoria. i sighed in relief as i saw her message.

vic: hey, you wanna get out of there?

my body relaxed and i immediately typed back a "yes." i shut my phone off and looked at him with a fake apology on my face. "sorry, my friend is going through a really hard break up right now, and she really needs someone. sorry."

i didn't even let him talk before i grabbed my coat and walked out of the restaurant, hearing clicks and seeing flashes. i groaned and rushed to my car, sighing in relief as i made it.

i turned my keys and began to drive home, feeling worn out from the "date" even if i did absolutely nothing.

about my dating history, i had only dated one person when i was seventeen. since then, i hadn't even kissed anyone else because i could never find anyone even half as good as she was. i didn't like to admit it, but i was still deeply in love with her. and secretly, i wished she was too.

the same year

i groaned as i felt the sun shining in my face as i laid in bed and i shoved my face into my pillow. i heard a giggle from beside me and my frown disappeared as i smiled widely. the bed dipped, and i felt her arms wrap around me and a kiss being pressed to my cheek.

i sighed and turned to roll over on top of her making her squeal. i attacked her dark skin with kisses and heard her joyous laugh escape her mouth. i slowed down my kisses and popped my head out of her neck, the smile still playing in my face. "hi, beautiful."

her eyes glistened and she giggled, stroking my back. "hello, my handsome fiancé." i smiled widely at her words and kissed her deeply, completely forgetting neither of us have brushed out teeth.

her tongue slipped into my mouth and i sighed, pulling away reluctantly. i bit my lip as i smiled and brought my hand up to one of her braids, running my fingernail over it. "hm," i hummed contently. "i love you, amara."

she smiled, showing off her white teeth as she rubbed my hair as well. "i love you, y/n."
i smiled and leaned down to kiss her stomach lovingly.

"i can't wait to marry you, fuck." i whispered, my first love never crossing my mind.
