"But I don't wanna go to the dumb Daycaree!" Monaca wined, pulling on her big brother's sleeve. "You don't really have much of a choice.. I have to do work.." Haiji said, trying to walk to the elevator that leads upstairs.
Today was "Bring Your Kid To Work Day!" which was convenient for him since he didn't have a baby sitter today, but also bad since this meant he had to spend some time with his little sister. He had an important assignment to write today, and usually wrote in silence. Kids don't tend to be quiet, though...
Monaca looked at the elevator buttons curiously, she turned to look at him, asking with her eyes if she was allowed to press them. "..It's the top one." Haiji responded. Monaca happily pressed the top button, making a cheerful chime sound. Monaca watched in awe as the numbers at the top of the machine started going down.
Monaca was about to press the top button again, when Haiji quietly stopped her by gently pushing her hand away. Monaca frowned at him, but didn't say anything.
Haiji never saw Monaca often anymore, he was normally at work or at home in his room. Monaca was always at Kindergarten, in her room, or with her school friends. When Monaca first came to their house their father was always busy and Haiji had to look after her. She was too little to walk or talk, and just leaving a toddler all alone to die would be an inconvenience to his father.
Haiji never liked his little sister though, he always thought of her as some sort of alien that just appeared on their doorstep.
"What do you and dad even do here?" Monaca asked, the numbers still taking a while to go down to the lobby. "Just important adult things," he replied sternly.
"What kinda things? Secrets?" Monaca pulled on Haiji's work shirt, the red rose pattern stretched as she kept tugging. Haiji sighed, not making much eye contact with her.
"Just.. writing and planning.." The expression on his face was exhausted, but he tried to not lash out on her. She was just a kid, after all. "Writing?" Monaca suddenly stopped tugging, and looked at him curiously. "You write stories?" Haiji rolled his eyes, but nodded to amuse her. "Sure, yeah."
Monaca's eyes lit up, and grabbed her brother's hand. The door to the elevator opened finally. "That's so so so cool! I wanna read your stories one day!" Monaca smiled.
Monaca's smile always felt off, and creepy to Haiji, but at that moment it felt a little kind to hear that, even though he was lying to her."I'll be sure to show you sometime." Haiji said, not noticing that Monaca turned away to ogle at the lights displayed in the elevator. Monaca smiled at the array of buttons, her tiny hand hovering over all of them. Haiji quickly tried to stop her in horror.. "I don't wanna be here all night-!" he thought.
But before he could stop her, she took her palms and slid it across the bottom row like a painting, the buttons made a satisfying click as she did this. Her eyes lit up again as the yellow buttons turned orange, and she was planning to do it once again.. until she felt a tug on her sleeve, making her suddenly stop. "God dammit.." Haiji said, soaking in what she did.
Granted, he always wanted to do that."Vrrrrnn. . ."
"Ding!"
"Vrrrrnn. . ."
"Ding!""Vrrrrnn. . ."
"God..."
"Ding!"
"Dammit.."
Monaca seemed to have regretted doing that.. She was walking around, looking at the reflective glass and poles. She got startled every time the elevator stopped, since the machine would make them bounce. Monaca would cling on tight to the pole like her life depended on it, her feet hovering above the ground for about a split second- "Clunk!"
-before her little shoes forcefully hit the metallic ground.
