The next day, Kei could barely hold his head up since people were whispering in the corridors. His mother had taken notice of the increase in his anxiety, but he had played it off as this Friday's exams. In which Amai threatened to not cook him dinner if he doesn't pass. Kei would have to cook for himself, not that he's bad at it.
His eyes dart up every once in a while to search for Tyler.
Tyler, Tyler, Tyler...
Tyler!
Kei dropped his books at the sight of the students running towards where the fight had started. Justin Levough was slamming Tyler to the lockers, Kei's vision of his friend slowly disappearing as more and more students block the scene to watch.
"No.... no, Tyler!" Running and pushing himself to the crowd, he sees Tyler with a black eye being held by the throat.
"Stop!" Kei screamed, but Justin landed a punch with Jason and Xavier holding Tyler's arms. "Tyler!"
"Still think it's funny to mess with me?!"
"No, don't hurt him!" Justin punched him in the gut once again. Kei was crying, but his desire to save his friend was fueled by guilt. He threw himself to Justin and held the arm that threatened to punch Tyler once again.
"Don't!"
"Kei!" Tyler gasped, just as Justin pulled his arm back causing Kei to stumble in the hallways, the students clearing up like he was some kind of disease. The Marauders stare at him, shocked.
Why is nobody helping?! In a spur of a moment, Kei got up and held himself in between Justin and Tyler. His heavy crying made Justin freeze in his tracks.
"Dude, what the fúck?" He hears Jason behind him, trying to hold down Tyler who thrashed around like a mental patient.
"Levough, if you hurt Kei I will gut you from díck to throat--"
"Please don't hurt him!" Kei cried, cutting Tyler off. "If you want to hurt someone, just do it to me."
"What the hell, Sprout!" Xavier and Jason pinned Tyler to the locker, watching the scene with anticipation.
Justin laughed, loudly. "Wow! This is sweet and all, little kawaii nugget trying to save this freckly son of a bítch. Everyone should take note!"
People around them only whisper among themselves, seeing for the first time someone dare break up a fight between the Marauders and their victims. Not even the teacher can do that, they'll get fired at Justin's command.
Then he grabbed Kei by the collar, making the boy almost break down but he held his position. For Tyler. "What do you have that you'll trade yourself for Weiner?"
"Anything," Kei whimpered, out of everyone's earshot. "You can do anything to me and I...I won't press charges or...or...or report....just bully me...only me...I-I don't care. Just don't...don't hurt Tyler...or...or anybody else... you can hurt me until you get tired..."
Justin stared at those wet, big brown eyes dispensing the freshest tears.
"Please," Kei sobbed. Justin recognized the basic plea from Kei's native tongue, and a small angel of pity tugged on him. "Please don't hurt him..."
But Justin Levough doesn't do mercy. Instead, he smirked, releasing the collar and pulling on his arm.
"That's a deal then, Suckerpunch." He whispered eerily before pushing Kei away. "Release the Freckly Pickle, boys."
"What?"
"Why?"
Justin didn't answer them as he and the silent Ryland de Vera walked away with Justin's carefree hands on his nape and elbows up. Xavier and Jason released Tyler with a grumble and a nudge, following the two other Marauders.
But not before Jason kicked the back of Kei's knee, causing him to fall, palms meeting the floor. He stayed there, sobbing. Students started to disperse while some expressed concern. Of course, everyone is afraid of the Marauders, and they don't want anything to do with who they mess with.
"Ássholes!" Tyler screamed but chose to help Kei instead by cradling the poor boy's head in his chest.
Once they were out of sight, Justin playfully punched Jason's stomach, making Xavier roar in laughter.
"Hey, what was that for?!" Jason groaned in pain. It wasn't a playful punch, it was serious and it hurt.
"The kid is mine," Justin said. Suddenly the punch isn't playful anymore. "If anybody's gonna make him cry it'll be me, alright?"
They separated to their classrooms, Justin looking back at the hyperventilating Kei Johnson being consoled by Tyler Wyner, before marching up the stairs to the second floor.
"Sprout..." Tyler's eyebrows dipped in concern. "What the hell have you done?"

Kei's mother startled him with a piece of toasted bread to the nose.
"Mom!"
In her native tongue, she giggled, "You've been staring at the air for 5 minutes when you'd most likely steal my food after finishing yours. It's untouched! I will stuff you if you get too thin, I want a chubby son."
"Mom. You say that every time I don't eat. Chubby doesn't look cute on me anymore, I'm not a kid."
"Shut up," she laughed. "Plump or Chubby will always be cute whether you're 5 or 50. Now eat," she pushed the plate one inch towards Kei, and since he couldn't argue with his mother he stuffed the salmon in his mouth.
"And don't you think I didn't see through you when you said you were sick this day."
Kei choked at what his mother said. He had skipped school today clearly because of Justin Levough, and getting through breakfast and lunch without Amai knowing was hard enough. Now at dinner, she caught on.
"How did you--"
"Medicine." She answered in English with an accent. "It didn't get drunk."
Kei smiled at his mother's terrible but understandable grammar. His father knows Japanese so there isn't any need to teach her English, but she did take classes before the divorce. It's just that it's hard to learn a new language when one is no longer a developing kid; she started around 30 years old.
"I'm sorry mom. I just didn't feel like going to school today."
"What about your A's?!"
"One day couldn't destroy my grades."
She relaxed but doesn't fully believe me. "What about Tyler?"
Kei's last spoon of miso soup stopped right on his lips. What about Tyler?
Clamping his mouth on the spoon he quickly muttered, "Thank you for the food." Before standing up and scurrying to his room.
"Where are you going?"
"Calling Tyler."
As he disappeared upstairs, Amai smiled at her food. "That kid. Always others before self."
later on,
IN HIS BEDROOM,
"Are you seriously okay?! Your black eye? Did... Did you put ice on it? Is it gone?!"
[Sprout. Seriously. My eye's fine. It won't kill me. And relax, the Marauders didn't do anything, I promise.]
"And... " Kei gulped. "Justin L... Levough?"
[He's pissed that you didn't come to school.]
There was a long pause. Kei's pen flew from his hand because he kept tapping it on the desk, a habit of his. He started breathing heavily at the mention of Justin pissed but didn't let Tyler hear his panicked state.
[That's it.]
"Tyler..." Kei started fake sniff. "T-Tyler... you're not telling me stuff. Since when do you keep secrets?"
Finally, after one minute of giving him the silent treatment but never-ending the call, the liar cracked.
[Look, Sprout... I didn't want to pressure you. I know how you get...]
Kei starts to get worried, exactly what Tyler doesn't want him to feel.
[Justin kind of... threatened to beat me up or get me expelled. He said something about keeping promises.]
Tyler heard a sniff come from Kei.
[Hey, hey buddy... don't worry, okay? Stay away from school at least for now. Maybe Justin will forget about you.]
"But Fruit---!"
[...will kick Justin's áss if he tries something. Don't worry. I love you, take care, and don't ever show your face to any of the Marauders tomorrow.]
Kei frowns. And let them beat you again?
