Chapter 1
Blue skies with white clouds speckling the perfect sheet of blue. I smiled. Could this be anymore perfect?
“What?” I turned my head to the left.
“Hmm?” I answered him.
“What are you smiling about?” He was propped up on one elbow, gazing at me, amusement sparkling his gorgeous eyes. I looked away and back at the clouds as I thought of my answer.
“Perfection.” I laughed at his puzzled expression. It didn’t last long however. His face started to change. His expression went from confusion to lust. His cheekbones sharpened and his eyes turned from a forest green to a deep grey. Thunder echoed across the meadow, rattling my heart. I looked to the darkening sky.
“No.” I whispered. I jumped to my feet, intending to run as far from here as possible. Before I could move hands grabbed my waist and I was spun around. Eww! This is not the gorgeous green-eyed man who was lying next to me moments ago. No. I stared back at the face of the devil. Well, sort of. He smirked at me as his hands started to wonder across my body, but his eyes never left mine. I was pushed backwards and fell onto a bed. Rain pored down and soaked my cloths. The devil fell down on top of me. No! Not again! I fought and screamed. His hands clasped around my upper arms, shaking me. I sat up in my bed so fast that my head smacked into something incredibly hard.
“Ouch!” I rubbed my forehead, cringing as I did it. My sister was sitting on the floor, glaring at me and gingerly touching her head. Well that explains the bump starting to form on my head. I rubbed my face and groaned. It was wet and sticky from tears and sweat. I bet it is all puffy too, great. Kayla’s eyes go from annoyance to concern. She climbed onto the ginormous bed and sat opposite to me, crossing her legs.
“Another nightmare?” I closed my eyes and nodded, replaying the course of the dream in my mind. Kay took my hand in hers.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Kayla was three years older than me. We were as close as sisters could be. When we were younger I would follow her everywhere, we used to get into so much trouble, and most of the time we knew we were going to get caught, but that was the fun of it, the thrill. As long as we got into trouble together it would be ok.
“Val?” I opened my eyes. Kay’s face was inches from mine but I didn’t flinch. She cupped my face and just stared at me. Tears started to leak from my eyes.
“It’s so unfair.” I shakily breathed out. More and more tears pored from my eyes until I was full out sobbing. Kay put her arms around my shoulders and pulled me in. Stroking my hair she muttered soothing words. When I wasn’t sobbing anymore she pulled back just a bit, but I was wrapped in her warm comforting embrace.
“I know honey, I know.” She sniffed. It wasn’t just me; it was hard on all of us. Well all of us left. My father left when my younger brother was born and my mother left on my 16th birthday. She was the smart one, she left before she got caught up in all this.
“But…” Kay continued, “Do you know how much trouble we will get in if you are not ready in time?” I sighed and jumped off the bed and running into the warm bath my sister prepared for me earlier. I swear, the pleasantries of this place. I stripped and welcomed the warm water. I washed my hair and scrubbed my body. Grabbing a towel and wrapping it around me I stepped out of the bathroom. Kay was rushing around my room, setting things up and grabbing things. I almost stepped back into the bathroom when I saw the dress she had put out for me to wear, but she saw me and pulled my arm over to the couch. I wrestled into the dress.
“Sit.” Kay commanded me; I obeyed. Started with my hair. She blow dried it then curled it, letting the curls flow free. Then she applied a little bit of make-up. Not that I needed it, but ok. When she was finished she stood back to admire her work. I was about to sit down on the couch, exhausted, (and it was only eight-thirty!) when she let out a shrill scream. So loud that the devil could probably hear from two floors and seven doors down. Unless he was the reason for her scream. Unless he was in this room. I reached for the dagger strapped to my upper thigh. My sister and I made as many precautions as possible to make me feel at least a little safer. With my hand on the hilt I scanned the room, ready for anything. Nothing, there was nothing. I looked at my sister, raising my eyebrows, questioning her. Her eyes were wide and she shook her pudgy face and grabbed my arm, dragging me the closest mirror. When I saw what made her scream I burst out laughing and fell to the ground clutching my stomach.
“You think this is funny do you?” I looked at my sister, standing above me with her arms crossed across her chest and giving me her sternest look, which only made me laugh harder. Once I settled down I answered her question.
“Yes Kay, I actually really do.” I said grinning at her. She scowled at me and grabbed a cushion, throwing it at me. I caught it and threw it back. I grabbed two more cushions off the couch and started to advance on her when the door slammed open and the devil burst into my room. Kay and I both froze. Luckily there were a couple of rooms between the on Kay and I were in and the door. I threw the pillows onto the couch and sprinted to the bathroom, leaving Kay to fix up the room. I shut the door and locked it before he could enter the bedroom. I leaned my back against the door and let out a puff of breath. That was too close. I caught my reflection in the massive wall length mirror and had to cover my mouth and seriously control my self so I didn’t burst out laughing. A massive bruise resembling the colours of a plum, a pear and the outside shell of a coconut all put together in a lump on the top right of my forehead. I grinned, Devil will not be happy with this. My grin fell as his angry voice traveled through the door.
“Where is she?!”
“In the bathroom, sir. But she is still getting ready.” Came my sister’s small voice. An angry growl escaped his lips and I feared my sister’s safety. Only when I heard the door slam shut did I leave the safety of the bathroom. My sister was just sitting on the couch, very calm. Well, that is good. I went over and sat next to her. She took my hands in hers.
“This is just cruel.” She whispered. “ You can’t do this to a 19 year old Val, it’s just not fair! Can he even do this?” She jumped off the couch and started pacing.
“You know he can Kay, he can do anything.” I looked down at my hands. He can do anything he wants and nobody is going to stop him. She took m hands and pulled me to my feet.
“Val, no matter what happens, I will be here to help you ok?” She smiled at me. “So to start us off, I am going to help you cover that ugly blob on your face.” I laughed a little as she rushed around my room collecting all sorts of different types of makeup. I sat as she tried to cover up the bruise. I thought about my day ahead and almost burst into tears. Tonight is a grand ball in my honor. For tonight Devil is going to propose to me in front of every single important person. And I have no choice but to say yes.
