Chapter 2

“This is ridiculous.” I complained. “I can’t even breathe.”

“Well you look gorgeous so…that doesn’t matter.”

“So if I suffocate to death it would be ok because I look gorgeous?”

“Exactly! Now you have the right idea.” Kay gave me a thumbs up and a fake grin.

“Kay!” I whined like a child. God I wish at this moment I could be one. I did look gorgeous though, not to boast or anything. I was sporting a red gown that flowed from my stomach down to the floor. My upper body was covered by a vine like pattern. Red also.

“Hey Kay?” I ask when she didn’t answer me. “Do you know what the colour red means?”

“Hmm?” She was distracted with my hair.

“It is the colour of fire and blood. Energy, war and danger. Why am I wearing red?!” This stopped Kay and she looked at me in the mirror.

“Why can’t I wear yellow? Yellow is a pretty colour. You know what it means? Hmm? Yellow is the colour of sunshine, joy and happiness.”

"You know why Val." She said. "Because Devil can't stand the colour. Too bright on his poor eyes." She fake pouted and we both laughed.

"Well that can't be the only reason." Kay looked at me confused. " Well sunshine, joy and happiness aren't exactly...words I would use to describe him." She smiled.

"No. I think fire and blood are a perfect match." I grinned. It was good to joke around with her again. Everything had gotten so serious lately. The bedroom door swung open. Devil stood in the doorway and looked over me. He really shouldn't be seeing me before the ball but well his country his rules I guess. I stood and my sister and I both curtsied. Which, by the way, is incredibly difficult in a huge gown. But unfortunately I managed it without falling and breaking my face. I kept my eyes on the ground. I still felt his eyes wandering my body. Men, gross.

"Leave us." I heard him say to my sister. Instantly I panicked and looked at Kay. She gave me a small sad smile but tapped her upper thigh reminding me of the dagger. This gave me but a little bit of comfort as my sister exited the room shutting the door behind her.

Instantly Devil moved in closer to me. I could feel my heart beat rising in my chest and my mind was screaming at me to run but I stood my ground and didn't flinch.  As he got closer he stubbed his toes on the leg of the coffee table in the middle of the room. He yelped loudly and let out a string of swear words as he clutched his foot and hopped about my room. Wow, the will power in me that it took not to laugh at that moment was incredible! Kay burst into the room. And stopped when she saw him dancing around my room and me just standing there chewing my lip. She ran out to get someone to help.  Devil hopped over to the couch and lay his leg out and glared at me. When he opened his mouth about to say something Jessie rushed in and put his arm around her neck to help him of the couch. Jessie is the lovely doctor who works in the castle. She is a mother of three. Her husband left them two years ago, sending the family into desperate need for money. Jessie was qualified in medicine so she got a job here. Poor her I say. I know she hates working here, but she is the kindest person in this castle to me besides Kay, so I love her like family. She exited the room with a hobbling prince by her side, but in the door way she turned her head and gave me a wink, then left. When the door closed Kay and I both burst into laughter!

“Oh my gosh!” Kay puffed out, trying to breath. I on the other hand didn’t have any breath for words. I sat on the couch clutching my stomach, breathing deeply.

After five minutes of laughing, composing ourselves and then starting up in another fit of laughter, we were able to speak.

“Do you think tonight will be canceled?” I asked through ragged breathing.
