Mildred Hubble is 12 years old, lives in London with her mom, and lives a regular life. She never imagined that one day, a girl would change all that in an instant. The day the Maud Spellbody crash-landed on her balcony would easily become the best day of her life.

When Maud Spellbody crashed on Mildred Hubble's balcony she thought that nobody could see her as she is a witch but Mildred could. Maud lost her glasses when she crash-landed and Mildred being Mildred had to help her newfound friend out. As quickly as she landed she took off with Mildred of course because it was her who flew on the broomstick and it was she who navigated her way above the treetops to get to Cackle's Academy for Young Witches.

As soon as they were over Cackle's they had to crash land in the pond and not knowing that it was a foot deep, they flailed about in the water. That is until a witch dressed in all black with a tight bun atop her head appeared in front of them. She scolded them and told them to get out of the pond, so they did. As Mildred never knew that witches existed, when this scary-looking figure magicked them dry, Mildred was shocked and delighted at the same time.

The bigger witch introduced herself as Ms. Joy Hecate Hardbroom; Deputy Headmistress at Cackle's Academy and inquired about the girls. Maud introduced herself and then looked at Mildred. To say Mildred was nervous wasn't quite enough to cover it, she was shaking inside. But she gathered up her courage and said, "Mildred, Mildred Hubble." Ms. Hardbroom checked her list and couldn't find a Mildred Hubble on the list of new students, so she said, "I don't see a Mildred Hubble anywhere on this list." Maud quickly interjected stating, "She was going to go to Pentangle's Academy but she changed her mind and decided to come to Cackle's." That was enough for Ms. Hardbroom so she ushered them along and into the academy for the tour by way of transference which is another way to travel for witches.
