disclaimer: the characters of 'frozen' and/or 'rise of the guardian's' are not mine but are copy write to Disney as well as Dreamworks. This a writing purely of my unmet desire to see a published relationship between Jack frost and Elsa.
He had stumbled upon her by accident. He wasn't looking for someone like her for he did not know she existed and thought he was alone. He was a wanderer, going from place to place as the seasons changed to cover the world in beautiful icy winter.
He'd just been making his yearly round on the kingdom of Arenedelle, circling the towns, freezing the morning dew. his work was beautiful, it looked as if the world was miraculously cased in glass, and he loved it.
He was flying around the castle, preparing to cover it all in beautiful frost. But, much to his surprise, there was a single window that did not need his talents for it was already decorated in the intricate, swirling patterns of an icy layer that was not his.
Curious he peeked through the window to see a baby girl in a cradle with white-blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She lay awake, laughing joyously as a light flurry of snow flakes showered her.
Jack was captivated, concluding the child had supernatural abilities as a mortal, deducing that they were of her creation for he was not the one causing the flurries. He was awestruck watching her, so much so that he broke his own rule and entered the child's room. Startled, she looked at him as he came through the window, staring at him with large eyes. She seemed frightened at the sight of him.
"Don't be afraid," he whispered. "I'm not going to hurt you." Then, realizing she probably couldn't understand him, he laid his staff down and drew a picture of a butterfly in the frost she had created on the window. She watched with curious eyes and, as he brought the butterfly to life, lit up when it flew around her.
Her laughter filled the room and warmed Jack's heart, in that moment he made a vow to her that she'd never come to know the loneliness that he lived with since he woke up.
Jack visited her everyday, leaving briefly at night to handle guardian duties. He quickly learned her name was Elsa while visiting her.
As time went by she was joined by a sister named Anna. Though she was sweet and playful, she was lacking in supernatural abilities.
'better for her' Jack once thought. 'life will be less lonely for her this way.'
He harbored no ill will against Elsa's younger sister, he was admittedly selfish with Elsa's attention, because he didn't get to see her as often as he liked. In all honesty, Jack was grateful for Anna. She kept Elsa company in the moments when he couldn't. But that didn't lessen his selfishness.
As Elsa and Anna grew older they interacted with him more. But he could not be seen by anyone in the cake but the two girls. Everyone decided that they must have made an imaginary friend to keep them company since Elsa's ice abilities kept them isolated in the castle.
As the theories of Elsa's imaginary friend developed farther so did her abilities, and Jack taught her many things. Becoming her instructor to master her powers. Then the accident happened and Anna had to be taken to the trolls to be healed and, unwillingly, fire get about Elsa's powers. When they finally returned to the castle Jack was waiting, wracked with worry. He was relieved that Anna was fine, but when he went to hug her she walked right through him.
She no longer remembered the cold adventures with her sister so she no longer believed in Jack Frost. Much to Jack's dismay, Elsa could not tell her sister about her forgotten friend, for she had to be isolated from Anna to keep her safe. They were put in separate rooms, Elsa's parents insisted she keep as distant from her sister as possible.
With this new form of isolation Jack felt even more compelled to keep his promise to her. He visited more often and they played lots of games, but as Elsa grew older, her powers grew stronger, and she couldn't always control it. She feared hurting those around her, her father insisted she wear gloves to contain and conceal her powers. This tortured Jack, he could teach Elsa how to make live things out of ice, make snowflakes do her bidding, but he couldn't teacher her to control the powers within her.
Though Jack didn't want to admit it, he could feel Elsa distancing herself from him. People insisted he was a figment of her imagination, she grew more serious, and her powers grew beyond her control.
One day, Jack visited as he always did, to try and cheer her up. But to his horror she couldn't see him, couldn't touch him, and as far as he could tell she couldn't hear him.
Jack was tortured by this. Each time she walked through him was a reminder that she'd started to believe those who told her he wasn't real. So since he couldn't talk to her or play with her, he decided to watch from a distance.
As Elsa grew older she grew to be more beautiful and more isolated, and Jack grew despaired. He longed to hold her on the nights she cried herself to sleep, the tears freezing on her cheeks, wished he could tell her everything would be okay. He felt he'd broken his promise to her though he had never left her side.
