Chapter 27
Morgan's POV
"Do you know if she's coming back?" His dark bushy eyebrows furrow as he looks up at me. My long and skinny fingers gently stroke the side of his cheek, analyzing his worried expression. My heart aches with guilt every time I see his cast. This wouldn't have happened if I was here.
"I don't know." He nods in silence and places his head back into my lap. The low volume on the T.V drives me into an endless portal of thoughts. She always forgets to take her medication. Christian always seems to make excuses for her behavior. I get that she's a schizophrenic, but she's a danger to us and everyone she's with without her meds.
"She can't come back." Mason says softly, as if he was reading my mind. His fingers gently clutch my T-shirt.
"She won't. I'll make sure of it." I wrap my arms around him with small kisses of reassurance.
Our thoughts are interrupted when we hear the doorbell ring. After Mason rolls over to let me get up, I get a bit redundant when heading to the door. "Just check who it is first." Mason says quietly.
I gently move the curtains placed next to the door aside, seeing a glimpse of shaggy golden blonde hair from behind our tall bushes.
Oh god.
I groan slightly, throwing my head back in annoyance.
"Who is it?" Mason asks, poking his head up from the couch.
"Mm..nobody." I say, as I unlock the door.
"How can I help you detective?" I keep my voice low so Mason doesn't hear me. He turns his face towards me, and gives me a light smile.
"Morgan. Good to see you." He's holding on to a zip loc bag, with something covered in a napkin inside of it.
"Hey." He's wearing regular clothes now, with a dark washed denim jacket and black jeans with rips in the knees. He looks comfortable, but good.
"We went through the trailer we found Lacey in, and found this.." He stepped closer to me and continued to analyze my face once he handed the bag over to me.
I stared at him in confusion, and started to open the zip loc bag in front of him. I almost dropped to my knees once I realized what it was. It was a necklace. My necklace that Ronnie gave me on my 18th birthday. It had a key charm, with a heart right next to it. It had an emerald gemstone, since my zodiac sign was a Taurus. Ronnie would always tell me "You're the key to my heart." It was corny, but cute.
I felt a tear drop down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it away. I held it tighter in my hand and held it closer to my chest. I looked up at him, and saw a look of sympathy cross his eyes.
I miss him. I miss him so much.
I began to silently weep in front of him and clutch the necklace closer to my chest, as if it somehow brings me closer to Ronnie.
I feel a pair of arms wrapping themselves around me, locking me in an embrace. I silently stand there, the sounds of my sobbing slowly getting quieter.

Detective Carson's POV
We've been standing here for what felt like almost 5 minutes. Her cries quiet down each time, but I could tell by her shoulders moving that she was still crying. Her head was still buried into my chest. I didn't notice how tight I was holding her until now. She seemed to calm down a bit, after lifting her head up and revealing her red face. Her bloodshot eyes were puffy, and her nose was so red she looked sick. Her bottom lip quivered ever so slightly, though she tried her best to hide it from me.
Her hands were holding onto the bag so tightly you'd think it's rip.
My heart ached for her.
"Thank you. Thank you so much. You don't know how much this means to me, really." She begins to make eye contact with me, something she has a hard time doing.
"O-Of course. I had to." I take a step back, planning on heading into the city for the day, but she stops me.
"You had to?" She wipes her face with the back of her hand.
I lean against the railing of her front porch, sighing before I spoke. "I know what it feels like..to not have closure, Morgan." I begin to feel old emotions bubble back up again, but I quickly brush them away.
"Oh." She says, pausing to look around.
I turn to leave to try and avoid any questions from coming up and she stops me once again.
"Wait." Her skinny fingers gently grab onto my elbow, gaining my attention. "Why don't you come inside for a bit? We really could use an extra person in the house. You know, because it's just been so quiet lately." She begins to fidget with her hands, looking everywhere but at me.
I stare at her for a moment and admire the smirk she's holding back with her teeth clamped over the top of her mouth. Her nose wiggles in a cute way that brings a slight smile to my lips. "You know what-"
"Okay." I bury my hands in my pockets, taking a step closer to her.
"Okay?" Her eyebrows rise, her lips parting.
"I'll come in. Just for a bit."
