"The results are here, and I have to say, they're very disappointing," Mr. Kim said, pushing his spectacles up the bridge of his nose.
Y/N gulped, anticipation playing with her. This was bad. This was very, very bad.
"Surprisingly but not surprisingly, only one student has performed exceptionally well," the teacher continued, "Kim Y/N."
I- wait, what?
The girl's jaw dropped open in bafflement. Every head turned to look at her, including Mr. Kim's, making her close her mouth and blush slightly before she got up and went over to the front of the class to receive her test paper.
The hint of a smile was on his lips as he handed it over to her. He'd figured out from her expression that she wasn't expecting this, which just confirmed that she indeed was a smart one.
Y/N made a small bow and returned to her place as he proceeded to give out the test results to the others. Once seated, she examined her paper, and yes, she'd received a few grace marks here and there as usual, but her performance really wasn't bad at all. Most of it was things she'd remembered from paying attention in class, and the rest was guesswork, so she reckoned it was just Mr. Kim who was a good teacher.
The chair beside her groaned a little when its occupant resumed his place on it. She looked up at the boy who she'd been sitting next to for all her Economics classes since the beginning of the semester, and despondency was written all over his face. Y/N tried not to, but ended up glimpsing into his test paper.
And it wasn't nice. Not horrible, but not nice either. The look on the his face was just so glum, she felt bad for him.
Wait, what about Seungwan?
Her gaze was up and about in an instant, searching for her best friend. When she found her, she saw that Seungwan didn't seem very happy with her result, either. Y/N got up to go to her, but sat her ass back down immediately when her eyes fell on Mr. Kim, who was by coincidence looking her way right at that point of time. He raised a sceptical brow at her, to which Y/N gave an awkward half-smile before breaking eye contact, and he continued distributing the papers.
The Kim girl sighed before directing her attention back to Seungwan, hoping that she caught her eye, but she was talking to Soojin. Y/N scowled, but didn't give up. She was about to whisper-yell her friend's name when Soojin's gaze landed on her, and the girl threw her a glare before turning back to Seungwan.
This woman, Y/N was so done with her. Alas, she was still a friend.
Guess I'll have to wait till the class is over, Y/N thought. She huffed, crossing her arms as she frowned down at her test paper, which rested on her table. A second later, her stare shifted a bit, settling on the boy next seat's clasped hands that hung between his knees. She looked up, and caught him eyeing her paper.
He turned away when she did, licking his lips nervously.
Y/N considered for a moment before speaking. "You wanna go through my paper?"
The boy was taken by surprise, but managed to respond. "U-uh, yes . . . sure."
She chuckled lightly. "Wow, first words? I thought you were mute or some."
A pink tint surfaced on his cheeks, making Y/N smile internally as she slid her test from her table to his. He was so shy, it was kinda cute.
As he scanned and compared both their papers, Y/N absently remembered the title and wondered if the author would make him ask her to tutor him, like in every other cliché.
The author didn't, and she couldn't care less.
