Rain pelted onto the carts canopy, you're father urged the horse forward.
Suddenly, all hell broke loose. Your father fell back into the cart, blood gushing from a bullet wound on his forehead. He died immediately. You screamed, it was horrific and the worst thing was, his head landed in your lap.
You couldn't move, no matter how hard you tried, all you could do was stare into his dead eyes.
'God dammit Hosea there's a kid!' A raspy voice yelled, it sounded like a man.
'A new kid to look after!' Another, older voice said, clearly excited. Your sleeve was tugged on, snapping your head around, you saw a boy, about your age looking at you with sad eyes.
'I'm sorry, please, drink this.' He whispered, his voice was surprisingly comforting. hesitantly, you took the bottle, before even touching the lid you read the label, 'health tonic'. oh.
closing your eyes, you downed the bottle.
'good job!' the boy whispered, smiling. he took the bottle from your hands, dropping it so he could grab your hand and pull you from the cart, 'let's get your horse ready.'
a male with average height looked at you and smiled, an older man did the same except he was a bit shorter, you were probably his height.
'let's get you out of here son.' the taller male said, 'i'm dutch and this is hosea. that young man there, is arthur.'
arthur smiled at me, then pulled me to the front of the cart where my family horse, hurricane was standing, unfazed from the bullet. he was a tall horse for a three year old, about 16 hh, he was an ardennes horse with a chestnut coat. arthur was nothing but astounded.
he took out his knife and cut the harness, leaving the bridle on. you ran up and pushed him away, 'stay away from him, got it?'
arthur nodded, smiling, he understood where you were coming from. he would earn your trust, eventually.
you led hurricane to the side of the cart and tied him up. quickly, you chucked the saddle you were transporting on his back. after throwing your reins over his head, you threw yourself on.
'you're quite the horses man, aren't ya son?' dutch stated, you nodded. he smiled, it wasn't intimidating what so ever, it was fatherly. it was soothing.
arthur rode up next to you, he smiled reaching out to pat your leg, he motioned you to follow dutch, 'let's go.'
