"Get up miss! We're under attack!"
My maids shove the slippers onto my feet and drag me down the hall. They lead me to a statue. Briar presses in the thumb and a secret passage opens up.
"You must hurry miss. We have to go to another shelter for the help. Good luck Lady March."
I'm pushed inside and the wall closes over before I can pull them in. What if they don't make it? I shiver at the thought and continue down the passageway. I start running when I remembered my mission: protect the royal family at all cost. I take the steps two at a time. Guards let me into the vaulted shelter.
Thank god the royal family is here safely. I frantically look for Marigold and Annisa. Where are they?!
I didn't realize I was crying until I felt my tears being wiped away. Cassian looks at me worriedly.
"Marigold and Annisa aren't here. What's taking them so long?"
"I'm sorry love I don't know. But I promise you they will be alright."
"How can you promise such things?"
"I have faith."
"Faith isn't going to save them."
He grabs my hand and leads me to the guards.
"Can you please ensure her that her friends are being well protected."
"We have our best men protecting you ladies. They are probably in the passageway taking there time. They may be a bit spooked is all."
"Thank you."
Cassian wraps an arm around me in comfort. He leads me towards other selected candidates.
"Can you all please take care of Lady Lilith. She is scared for her friends."
"Of course"
He gives me a reassuring smile before he leaves to his family.
"I'm Sally. This is Grace and Margaret. I'm sure your friends are walking over here. I had to practically be dragged down. I was frozen in fear."
"I'm sorry."
"It's alright. I'm feeling much better now."
"That's good..."
Shouts interrupted our conversation. The vault door opened and guards rushed in carrying my two friends. I run to their side.
"What happened?!"
"Marigold sprained her ankle running and Annisa refused to leave her. They were found and the intruders tried to take them."
I cover my mouth to hide my sobs. My only friends and I wasn't there to protect them.
"I'm alright Lily just my ankle and a few cuts."
"You could've been taken Mary."
"I know. It's ok come here."
My friend gives me a comforting hug.
"What happened to Isa?"
"She tried fighting them. They kicked her abdomen and punched her in the face. Nasty men didn't even flinch hitting her."
"Your safe now."
I hadn't noticed Cassian coming up behind me. His arm around my shoulders as a comforting embrace.
"Lady Annisa should wake up soon. As soon as everything is cleared you will both be rushed to the medical wing and Lady Lilith will be allowed to visit after she gets some rest. You have a very good friend here, she was very worried."
"I wouldn't trade her for the world."
