December started with an unexpected twist. When Trace walked into the common room, people were giggling all around. Trace rolled his eyes and sat down on the couch. Someone nearly burst out laughing, and Trace shook his head. Luna came in, and sat next to him. Someone actually did burst out laughing, and Trace turned. "What are you all giggling about?" He demanded, and one of the 3rd years pointed above the blue haired boy's head. Trace looked up, and his body froze. Above the couch, above him and Luna, was mistletoe. Luna hadn't noticed. She was reading the Quibbler. Someone tapped Luna on the shoulder and pointed at Trace. She looked over at him, then at the mistletoe above them. She didn't seem at all fazed, and just sat Trace back down on the couch. "It's just a silly plant. We don't have to." She said, shrugging. Trace was really surprised this time. He had expected it to be awkward, but for her to say that.. He was so thankful. He sighed, and opened his book. He turned to a page, and started reading. Luna had now put her SpectorSpecs on her face, and was setting them on her head. Then, she looked up at the mistletoe. "You know, I think there are a couple Nargles up there." She said. Trace looked over at her. "Interesting." He said, nodding and smiling. Then, Trace remembered something. He got up, and went to his dorm for a few minutes. He came back down with a silver bracelet. He sat down next to Luna again. The common room was now growing fuller and fuller. "Should we go back by the lake?" Luna asked, and Trace nodded. They both got up, and walked quickly past Peeves the Poltergeist, and they sat down on the edge of the water. Trace held up the bracelet. "This is something my Muggle friend named Nessa gave me." He explained, pointing at a picture attached to it. Luna nodded, intrigued. After explaining all about his Muggle friends, and Luna was smiling by the end. "You have some great friends back in your town." She said. "And I have an amazing one right next to me." Trace said happily. Luna started to get up, and Trace followed. Before leaving the waters' edge however, she was stopped by Trace. "I hope we can still be friends. I know you said we don't have to but.." he said, before kissing Luna. She was startled, and Trace walked away sheepishly. Luna smiled, and caught up with him. "Of course we can still be friends." Luna said happily. Trace's face was red, but he smiled. Together, they walked back into the castle and to the common room. When they entered, it was nearly empty. People were probably heading to hang out. Trace decided this was the time to try and ask. "Hey Luna?" He asked, looking at the blonde girl next to him. She looked back at him. "Yes?" She said dreamily. "Would... would you want to go to Hogsmede this weekend? On... on a... a date..?" Trace's face flushed red as he said it, and he hid his face in a book. A light blush appeared on Luna's cheeks as well, but smiled. "Sure. I'd love to." She said happily. Trace smiled weakly, and nodded. The rest of the week was pretty normal for the two friends, other than their approaching date to Hogsmede. After classes on Friday, the two went back to their separate dorms and thought about Saturday. Trace was wondering what was going to happen, but Luna was more thinking about where they'd go. She hoped it would be The Three Broomsticks. Trace was also thinking about going to The Three Broomsticks. Saturday came very quickly, and at 3:00, the two 4th years walked side by side to Hogsmede. Trace guided Luna to The Three Broomsticks, and they walked inside. They sat at a table in the corner, and Trace went to get them some Butterbeers. He came back with the two drinks, and gave one to Luna. She took it, and sipped some. She was staring dreamily at the opposite wall, and humming. Trace hummed along with the song, which he recognized. Luna noticed and smiled. The two continued humming together, the two smiling broadly at each other. After an hour or so, they decided it would be best to go back to the castle. As they walked, Luna looked at Trace. "That was fun." She said, smiling. Trace nodded, and they continued walking. "We should do this again sometime." Luna said happily. "Also," She leaned in and kissed Trace's cheek. "I would like to be your girlfriend." She said, getting straight to the point. Trace's face went completely red, and he didn't know how to react. He liked Luna, but for her to be so upfront about this... "I would like that." He said, without really thinking. Luna smiled. "You've got a lot of Wrackspurts floating around your head right now." She said dreamily, looking at him. Trace smiled, and his face returned to normal- mostly. He wasn't expecting this, but it was a welcome surprise. Trace and Luna were just happy to be more than friends.
