Ruby had been out on the Raccoon City streets for weeks now, she didn't expect anybody to come and help her after everything she had already been through. She could fend for herself just about. She was now twenty-one years old, the world had gone to shit and her life had been far from normal. Most of the time they had been on the run and even now she felt like she was still on the run due to everything that had happened. That night was the worst for her. It was the anniversary of her father's 'death'. There was no proof that he was dead so she now had hope that he was still alive and thought maybe he was in Raccoon City somewhere. She had set off to walk, gazing up at the stars in the sky for a moment.
As she walked, her gun down by her side she felt like someone or something was following her. She couldn't shake the weird feeling away but when she turned back the way she had come from, there was nothing there. She decided to take a shortcut, which would be a bad move. She didn't expect any of the undead to be in there and as she ran through, trying to be as quiet as possible one of the undead lunged at her knocking her off her feet and made her crack her head off the floor. Her gun clattered away from her as she groaned loudly and tried to fight the undead off but she was struggling. Her superhuman abilities that she had like her father's hadn't developed properly yet, although when she got angry her eyes would glow red.
She didn't have much time to react as she tried to fight the undead off, she couldn't reach her gun. What was she going to do? There was nobody there to rescue her and she thought she was a goner. She closed her eyes expecting to be killed and turned into one of them things. But then there was a gunshot, piercing the air and making her ears ring, the undead fell to the floor as it was shot in the head. She had blood down the front of her off when it had been shot. She looked around but couldn't see anybody there at first but her eyesight was a little blurry. She managed to sit up but the person who had saved her hadn't approached her yet.
"Hello?" she called out. "Is there anybody still there?" There was a frightened tone to her voice, the attack had scared her quite a bit as she scanned the area but there was nothing there. The person who had saved her was hiding the shadows.

Nicholai stayed hidden for a moment. He had been brought in as part of an extraction team to search for survivors and take them to safety. He hadn't expected to see anyone out that night. Was the girl stupid? he thought to himself as he stared at her from when where he was hiding. He thought he best show himself because he didn't want to scare her anymore than she already was.
He stepped out of the shadows, his gun lowered down. "You shouldn't have come out here alone," he said in his thick Russian accent. "Are you stupid? Or just arrogant enough to put yourself into danger like that," he said with a scowl. Sometimes he hated people, other times he actually cared. Tonight he was in a mood, and not a good one. They could have picked any other team so why did they pick his? And of all the nights he actually found someone who had put themselves into danger.
Ruby glared at him. "I'm neither. I'm searching for my father if you must know. He lives around here, I used to live here. He was presumed dead but I don't believe that for a second. My dad is a survivor." She sighed to herself as she tried to get up but she struggled.
Nicholai put out a hand to help her up. "Let me help," he said still sounding very stern and cocky. He smirked. "Serves you right for coming out on your own!" He sighed heavily waiting for her to take hold of his hand. He realised how cocky he was being even if he didn't mean to be. "Are you going to get up or what?"
Ruby glared at him for a moment and then took hold of his hand as he pulled her to her feet. "No need to be so cocky mister." She frowned deeply and looked into his eyes. He seemed so full of himself. He sounded like he was from Russia and he was once a soldier. She saw the Umbrella logo on his top and backed off slightly. "You work for them..."
Nicholai looked down at his uniform and then shook his head. He hadn't let go of her hand as she had tried to back away. "They abandoned us, I'm not going to hurt you. What happened to you with them? Did they do something to you?" His demeanour was starting to soften now that he knew how afraid the girl really was.
"They murdered my mother when I was kid and then my father was killed by someone. They ruined my life and that was before all of this shit that kicked off." She realised they were still holding each other's hands and she let go, slowly lowering her hand down to her side and picking her gun up off the floor with her other hand. "There is nowhere safe anymore, so where do we go?"
Nicholai looked into the girl's eyes. "There is a safe place down in the subway where they can't get to us. Only problem is us getting there, you're not going to be a liability are you?" he asked with a frown.
Ruby looked at him. "Why would I be? It's not like..." She had forgotten she had cracked her head off the ground and groaned a little. "I'm fine don't worry." She smiled a little as she looked at the ground and started to walk.
He frowned a little. "You look a little pale to me. But if you say young lady." He laughed a little and started to walk with her. "I'm Nicholai by the way, what's your name?" He was just trying to keep conversation going but normally he wouldn't have. Normally he despised talking to people but he felt different around her, more relaxed.
"I'm Ruby. Its nice to meet you Nicholai." She suddenly stopped walking, the pain in her head was getting worse and she started to feel sick and dizzy. She grabbed his arm to try and steady herself.
Nicholai looked at her worryingly. "You okay? What's wrong?" He put his arm around her gently to support her in case she fell as they continued to walk. "Its not far, if you can manage." He kept looking at her as she seemed to grow more pale. "Ruby...."
She glanced at him as she tried to focus on her walking to get to the subway with him. "I don't feel so..." Before she could say anything else to him she collapsed, blacking out. Nicholai quickly caught her and sighed heavily. He scooped her up into his arms gently and started to carry her to safety. As they got to the subway, the others locked the gate behind him and they helped him down to the subway car with her. "You guys stay here, I don't want her to feel anymore scared than she is if she sees you guys in the same uniform. You should have seen her reaction to mine..."
He rushed her into the nearby subway car grabbing a first aid kit and treating her head wound as gently as he could. He kept gazing down at her, sighing to himself a little. Now it was just a waiting game to see if she woke back up.
You silly girl! Why did you have to go out alone? Don't you dare die on me? he thought to himself.
Was it possible that he was actually starting to care for someone?
