after long enough, I've mulled over it and Bex just seems scared as everyone else is in the book because she just is, she gets more under their power when she goes to the train station and freaks out about an escalator and then the turnstiles (I think that's what they're called in an underground train station?) and she braves it and goes with the Koggnossenti only to be dumbed down by the power.
Bex is just like any other person in the audiobook, scared for her life
that's why I feel like it isn't real
