"Vi", "Hey Vi, wait up" called a voice from the far end of the cafeteria. I was on my way to class. I turned and smiled at one of my best friends.
"Hey Amby"
"You midget! Thanks a lot for yesterday.", she replied sarcastically.
"Aww, come on. You know you had a good time", I smiled and started climbing up the stairs. I laughed, remembering what had happened. Yesterday, I was supposed to drive her home, since she wasnt allowed to use hers for a week (She had almost crashed it a few days ago). We had stopped to fill some gas and she immediately started flirting with one of the guys who worked there. You know, the usual. Flipping her hair back, giving flirty smiles, the regular. I had waited for 15 minutes like any good friend. Then, I had driven off and she hadnt even noticed! I waited outside for another half hour and finally drove home.
"Well, you can say that again! Luke totally drove me home and we're going to watch a movie tomorrow night."
"Wow, I totally found you a new boyfriend! You owe me! " I giggled.
"Sure, but you totally have to get me new earrings to wear for my date tonight. You owe me!" she mimicked.
"Later sis", I stuck my tongue out and ducked into class before she could do the same.
Two seconds later, my phone beeped. "black and silver ". It was from Amber.
Later that day, I went to the mall with a group of my friends. While they were checking out a new designer gown on display, I quickly bought a pair of gorgeous black and silver earrings and a thin, flimsy kind of art paper to make a card for one of my friends, whose birthday was coming up. "Damn, that was expensive", I thought, as I headed out of the shop.
Soon, we all went back home. Since the mall was rather close to my house, I decided to walk home. I was holding the art paper since I was all for going green. (No plastic bags, people!) The earrings were safely tucked in my pocket.
It had become pretty dark and I had taken a shortcut home. If you could call it that. It was more of a rough natural path that cut through the woods. The woods here werent dangerous. I mean, you might encounter a few animals but that was very rare too. All of a sudden, a strong wind kicked up and the paper flew from my hands. I tried to grab it, but it just danced with the wind above my head. "Being short sucks", I growled. The papers flew towards the woods. I wondered if I should just forget about them. But on second thought, they were expensive. I didnt really get much of an allowance either. So, I dashed behind them and finally caught up. I jumped into the air and caught my precious art paper.
Hmm, not much damage done, I thought, after I had taken a quick look at it. As I turned back, I saw something flash by. I quickly turned around and scrunched up my eyes to see better. It was a squirrel. Phew. I had been expecting a bear or a homicidal serial killer or something. As I turned to leave, I saw a small dark object on the ground. I seemed drawn towards it and my legs seemed to move on their own. It was a book. I had loved books since I was a small child. As I turned to open the ornate metal clasp on the book, my phone rang. It was my mom. She was going out with her friends for a while.
It was getting darker by the minute and so I took the book along with me and went home.
The house was empty. Mom was out and dad must be working. I headed straight to my room and looked at the book for a second time. It had an old dark leather cover and the metal clasp seemed to shine. It had a very intricate design on it and must have been really difficult to make. The lock clicked as I opened the clasp and the leather cover came off. The book seemed really old and thick.
On the front, in a flowing cursive script were the words: 'Time Travel'.
