"Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." Matthew 2:2

Can you imagine being alive during the time of Jesus' birth? A new star in the sky revealed his birth to wise men from a foreign land, thus the title, Starry Night. The most beautiful love story ever was fleshed out just over 2000 years ago. Join me in this journey to know Jesus better as we explore scripture that reveals how He is fully God and fully man.

The Matthew 2 scripture above quotes the wise men from the east who followed the star all the way to Israel in search of the king of the Jews. This occurred when Jesus was no longer a newborn, but possibly as old as 2, as we learn upon reading further in verse 16, when King Herod becomes angry that the wise men left the country without revealing the location of the infant. "Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men." But God had other plans and had already sent Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to Egypt for protection. This is just one example of the many amazing things that comprise Jesus' life. The whole of scripture from Genesis to Revelation centers around Christ!

Throughout this book we will look at Christ in scripture: preincarnate in the Old Testament, prophecies, miracles and key moments in Jesus' life, and finally his birth with a hint of what's to come! It is by no means exhaustive, but meant to ignite your heart during a time of year when it is so easy to be distracted from the real meaning of the season.

This advent reading was born from my own desire to prepare my heart for Christmas. The cover was compiled from a painting my daughter did for my husband when she was younger. It was an abstract of Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" painting and she added a Tardis (from Doctor Who, which I cropped out). I superimposed baby Jesus as that was not in the painting. May you truly treasure Christ in all His fullness as you go through these advent readings.

All scripture is quoted from the ESV Bible. As you go through this study pray that God will reveal His truths to you. For brevity and because I want God's words to speak for themselves I didn't add a lot of commentary. His words are more important than my words, and as the passages from different parts of the Bible are laid out you will have those "ah-ha" moments. Don't take my word or anyone's on what God says, but instead, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15. Study all of God's word, letting scripture interpret scripture and even looking up original Greek and Hebrew as needed (I use blue letter Bible for that).
