I woke up to the sound of a loud truck being pulled into a driveway. The sound startled me and prompted me to look at the alarm clock that stood on the nightstand on the left of my bed. It read seven o'clock, which caused me to roll my eyes in annoyance at the fact that they ambushed me out of sleep. I gradually got out of bed and went towards the window, where I spotted where the disruption derived from. It was the house across the street and parked in the driveway. There was a U-Haul truck and I could see boxes and furniture scattered across the front lawn and about three movers were working in and out of the house, pulling in whatever boxes and furniture they could in a quick-paced manner. As I tried to look for who the new neighbors could be, I could not see any to be found. No one in or around the house had seemed to look like they were to live in the house, as my eyes could only identify movers. In dismay, I pushed off the fact and thought that maybe later I would see the new neighbor and headed off to get ready for the day.
I still had work to be done on my upcoming piece of Japanese music, which I was due in about a week, and I decided it would be best to go to the campus library for a change of scenery and setting. Plus, I needed to find more solidified sources as the ones on the internet were not as justifiable. I got dressed in a black turtleneck with a baggy cream cardigan and pulled on a pair of faded black jeans. In addition, I pulled on an old pair of white sneakers and let my hair loose down past my shoulders.
Before heading down the stairs, I grabbed my bag with my laptop and notes and went straight for the kitchen. There I found Jung putting the coffee to brew. He took notice of me and smiled before handing me a large white mug. From the aroma that escaped from the mug, I could tell it was a strong, dark brew of coffee.
But, before I could ask why the large cup of coffee, he started, "I made our brew first." I nodded in acceptance, as Jung was the only person in the world who could handle really strong coffee.
He grabbed another large white mug filled with the same brew as mine and headed over to the kitchen table, where he continued to work on his laptop.
I took a seat with him, before inhaling a sip and asked, "How come I didn't see you yesterday?" He continued typing and started, "I didn't come home. I got caught up with Moon and his friends."
I nodded and replied, "When are you going to be done with your assignment?" Jung looked up and took a sip of coffee before saying, "I think in a couple of days. Why? Are you planning to go anywhere?"
"I don't know yet. But, um I think Moon is planning a trip somewhere for spring break." I said, wondering if he was planning to go with Moon and his friends.
"Oh, yeah. We were talking about it. Moon wanted the four of us and his friends to go on a big trip somewhere. But, we're still working out the details." Jung said, taking another sip.
"But what if I can't go because of work?" I said with concern as my job was very demanding, especially when I'm told to go to concerts or large venues.
Jung chuckled and said calmly, "Don't worry. It's nothing big and don't worry, it'll work out." I sighed in response and Jung took another sip before continuing on with his work. "You know, we always stick together, especially you and me," he said without looking up
"I know," I said and got up to put my cup in the sink. Jung got up as well and closed the laptop. He walked over with his mug to the sink.
Jung was my best friend and is the brother I never had. He stood six feet tall with brown hair and eyes. He has a fair complexion with a lean build. I was sixteen when I met Jung for the first time and from then on we were inseparable, as we would do everything together and make sure the other person was always alright. He was my protector, as I was his, and I wouldn't trade him for anything for the entire world.
As I put on my bag and got myself ready to head out, I noticed Jung was doing the same. He was pulling on some old pair of docs when he asked me, "Yoona, when are you coming back?" I looked over in his direction and said, "Maybe around 6 or 7?"
"Oh, okay. If you can, can you come around 6? Moon is having a little get-together and needs everyone to be here." Jung said with a bit of a face.
I looked at him as I processed what he just asked. And within a split second, I caught on to what Jung had asked.
"You mean a party, right? Moon is not allowed to have those since the last time." I said, my hands on my hips, and the sound of annoyance infused my voice.
I could see Jung nervously moving his hands around himself, and his eyes were shaking a bit. He knew better than anyone how felt about Moon's party. They were chaotic and someone always ended up arrested.
"Well..." he started, "It's not a party. It's a pre-game, you know. For the actual party at the 노래방 (karaoke room)." He stopped and waited for my response.
"Fine." I said, "But, this "pre-game" better stop at eight before..." I started, but Jung cut me off by running to hug me and replied, "Thank you, Yoonie."
I sighed and said, "Uh-huh," and started for the door. Jung ran to get his bag and said, "Let's go together."
We walked outside, and I could feel the light spring air graciously past my hair. The sun was barely showing, as the foggy sky had kept it hidden from sight. I could sense the dewy moisture that crystallized over the grass in our lawn and I smiled at the thought of how nice the weather was. Jung came up next to me after closing the door and said as we faced the house across from us, "You heard about the people moving in?"
"Yeah, Kathy told me and I saw they were moving in this morning," I said, searching for the truck that was parked in the driveway from earlier today. The truck had disappeared, as well as all the furniture and the boxes scattered across the lawn. How could they move in so quickly? I asked myself.
"Yeah, well, I hope we get to meet them. It's been a little boring around here." Jung said, as headed off for the campus.
