before meeting your soulmate, you can only see certain colors that are specific to you. when you get physically closer with your soulmate, you get to see their colors as well as yours. once you get emotionally close with your soulmate, you can see all colors.
if your soulmate dies: depending on the level of closeness you were before they died, those colors will stay with you for the rest of your life (ex: if you never got to meet your soulmate, then you will only get to see your certain colors for the entirety of your life).
