This building was always so quiet.
Nothing ever happens here, and you had gotten used to that. The most interesting thing that ever happens in Addison Apartments is the occasional parties the college kids throw. Those were easy to sneak into, obviously, because nobody could see you.
Only a few ghosts inhabit the building. You are one of them. You never really speak to any of the others though, you'd never felt the need to.
Today a new resident was supposed to move in. You were kind of excited for this. It would add a little excitement to your 'life' for once.
After listening to some of the resident's conversations, you gained some knowledge about the new residents. A 17 year old boy and his dad.
You sat on the roof, waiting for them to arrive. The wind blew against you. The sun rarely made an appearance around here, it was far too cloudy. The engine of a car could be heard as it pulled into the parking lot of the apartments.
You go down to the lobby to get a look at the new residents. A bell rings as the apartment doors open to welcome the new residents, and immediately the boy catches your eye.
Bright blue hair down slightly past his shoulders, piercing blue eyes, and... a white porcelain mask. Interesting.
You watch as they get their key and make their way up to their room. You manage to catch what room they got. Room 402.
You spend your day watching. Watching them unpack. Watching them set up. Watching to see if that boy ever took off that mask. But he never did.
You instead studied his other features. His height, the way he walked, his hands, his chipped black nail polish, his hair, everything.
They had brought a cat. Cute. Nobody else in the apartment had pets as far as you knew. You didn't pay much attention to it though, you kept your eyes on him.
He didn't speak a word the whole time. Eventually, you stopped watching them and went on to do your own things. But you couldn't shake that boy from your mind.
---
It was beginning to grow dark outside. Most residents were heading to bed now. You were sure that your new residents were going to sleep too, but you didn't plan to go watch them get ready for bed. That's just plain creepy...
You'd visit later, when they're asleep.
After a decent amount of time, you finally decided to go in. Their place was silent and all the lights were off, a good sign that they were asleep. You went from room to room, trying to find the boy's room. It didn't take long to figure out which one was his. You slowly stepped in.
Part of you was hoping he slept with the mask off. You couldn't help but wonder why he wore it. Perhaps he just wore it because he liked it? Maybe the mask was just his thing. Curiosity was killing you from wondering what lied beneath it.
You examine the walls, but they were empty. They just moved in, so that's to be expected. Boxes that had yet to be unpacked littered the floor. You look over at the bed that sat against the wall in the corner. He was lying there asleep, facing the wall next to his bed.
You watched him in silence for a moment. Then, he began to move. He pulled at the comforter that covered his body and moved to lay on his other side, facing you. He had covered most of his face with the comforter. Damnit.
Only his eyes were exposed. Oh shit. His eyes were open. And he was staring right at you.
But he couldn't see you, right? Nobody in the apartment ever had seen you. No matter how hard you tried to convince yourself he couldn't see you, the fear in his wide eye told you different. Oh, he was missing one by the way. That didn't bother you much though, as most of the ghosts here have pretty gnarly wounds. You had seen the glass eye sitting on his dresser when you first walked in anyway.
That didn't matter right now though. What mattered was that this boy could see you. You didn't know what to do, so you panicked and disappeared from his room, leaving him in shock.
He didn't sleep any more that night.
