Some would say that before Hogwarts potions professor Severus Snape's daughter was born, he was a mean, cruel and angry man who clearly hated children. And when I say "some", I mean all. But that all changed when he was in the custody of his daughter over the schools holiday. In the short month away from school, the man changed completely. Well, he was still a harsh grader and a complete perfectionist when it comes to his classes, any student in the castle could tell something had changed, even if they didn't know what caused it. You see, Severus kept the knowledge of his daughter very close and the only people who knew were the Hogwartsarts staff and their families, the head boy and girl, along with any students that were close to the professor. Yet with the handful of people that knew of her only the staff and their families have met the little girl, and only 2 people besides Severus knew the real identity of Amelia. Those two people were dumbledore, the one who faked Lyras death with the ministry and put her in the care of Severus, and the other being Minerva McGonagall, who taught Severus everything he needed to know about caring for a child, as she had a baby of the same age, and became somewhat of a mother figure in Amelia's life, but Severus will never admit that because his daughter was most definitely a daddy's girl.

Even though Amelia was a daddy's girl, it wasn't always easy going with her. It took her a while to stop asking for "daddy", "dada", "moony" and "paddy", which were clearly what she called her dads, but also kept calling for "hawy", "Lili", and "Jamie", probably looking for Harry, Lily, and James. The first six, Severus could deal with, but the last one, that one pissed him off. Lucky, she seemed to trust Severus, mostly because of the similarities between him and Sirius. Both have long black hair and similar facial features, not including the nose, which she liked to grab. It's almost like they trained her to do that and he wouldn't be surprised that his school year bullies would do something like that. By the time she was two tho, it seemed like she had forgotten about them and was calling Severus daddy.

As Amelia grew it was clear to all that her magic was stronger than the other kids her age, for example, the accidental magic that Minerva's son Alex was doing was moving things slightly over without even touching them, sometimes even when he was in a different room if his emotions were strong enough, but Amelia, she was clearly powerful. In the spring of 1983, just a few months after she was given to Severus, and a few more months until she turned two, she had a magical outburst that someone triple her age would have, she lit something on fire, and not like lighting a candle or even a piece of parchment that a very strong 8 year old would do, no, she lit everything around her on fire, and not just any fire, but a sort of magic fire that wouldn't go out with spell but wouldn't spread and the only way to put it out would be to calm her down. After that, Severus knew he would have his hands full with this little girl.

It was a random Tuesday in April and Severus was teaching 4th-year potions with the Gryffindors and the Hufflepuffs about scarab beetles and their use in potions when it all went down.

POV: Severus Snape/narrator

"Who can tell me what potion uses scarab beetles and what form they are used in"? I look up from my teaching notes to look at who raised their hand. Two Hufflepuffs were raising their hand, almost shaking with excitement to answer, but they weren't who he wanted to hear an answer from, no he wanted an answer from a specific Gryffindor. "Brewer, answer please," he says in a monotown voice, not to reveal how much he really cared for the kid. He hated Gryffindors as much as any other Slytherin but he saw his younger self in the kid, he was bullied and called stupid. He wanted to give the kid a chance to prove himself. "Uhm," he says, trying to find the correct page as his other classmates giggled at him. Severus uses a quick spell to close the book in the boy's hand. He knew that he knew the answer and was just stalling so he wouldn't have to answer. "without the book brewer" the boy looks up and me in shock and I hear some Hufflepuff in the back say "the dumbass couldn't figure out how to use the stairs, what makes him think he knows the answer". My head shoots up and I lock eyes with the kid. His face pales. 15 points from Hufflepuff for talking out of turn and saying mean things about your fellow students. All the Hufflepuffs turned to glare at the boy. "do you have an answer for me brewer" I ask, looking back at him. "yes sir" he says pausing to take a breath. "scarab beetles are most commonly used in th-" but he gets cut off by the sound of the door slamming open and Minerva rushing in.

"Can I help you, professor?" I ask, searching for some sort of hint as to why she barged into the classroom in a panic?

"Amelia got angry and now the whole daycare is on fire, clearly accidental magic. Everyone got out without burns somehow but they can't get to her, she has some sort of shield around her and we can't get her to calm down so she will put the fire out" she says, fear in her eyes.

And at that very moment, Severus truly felt like she was his own because his heart stopped beating and all he could think about was saving his baby girl. He grabbed his wand off his desk and started rushing to the door, but stops when he reaches it and looks over his shoulder, remembering about his class. "you guys are excused, for next class have 15-inch scroll on scarab beetles and there use" and with that, he turned around and ran.
