CHAPTER SEVEN (007.)
❝i didn't think you had any friends!❞
────────────────────────────
ALL THE KIDS ran to the lady who offered them ice cream, as cheol stayed where he sat with saebyeok beside him.
"what? no ice cream for you little man?" she questioned after holding it up to him.
a moment later, she turned her head away from the boy after hearing nothing back from him. she stared at the ice cream in her hands.
there were bandages on her brother's cheek, "what happened to your face?" she asked lightly, though he still didn't answer, "did you get in a fight with your friends?"
...
"if you keep being silent like that, i will leave." she said, turning her head and giving him a few moments to speak up. with little to no response, the girl sighs as she gets up. she doesn't start to walk as she more did it to get him to speak up.
"i don't want to stay here." he spoke abruptly, and saebyeok looked back. "you said you'd bring mom here." cheol's voice rose higher with frustration. "—you said you'd bring mom soon—if i just waited a month."
"you said we'd all live together."
you said, saebyeok said—and she couldn't help but feel disappointed in herself from promising her brother something that wasn't happening. as much as she wanted it too, it was going to be difficult.
saebyeok swallowed and sat back beside her brother, who had tears in his eyes. "cheol," she began. "it's—"
"all the kids said you lied!" he chided, cutting her off, "they said i'd never leave this place, they said you abandoned me here." a tear fell, and saebyeok wrapped her arm around him to pull her brother into her chest.
"no. mom and dad are going to come." she told him, "i'll make sure they do." she released him from her arms and looked into his eyes, which were filled with tears. "we'll all get to live under the same roof next year."
wiping the tears from his eye, "you know me right?" she murmured and cheol nodded his head slightly, "—i always keep my promises."
she took him in for another hug, just sitting comfortably as the other kids played in front of them, yelling or laughing here and there.
saebyeok raised her head from on top of cheol's to look around, and amongst the other kids scattered through the playground, she spotted someone walk in who she recognized. she recognized her too well.
aera.
her face was familiar, but she was unaware she knew her name. but then the memories from the night prior, when she and the girl were walking away from 456, came flooding back. aera had introduced herself, saebyeok had not.
