"Look who decided to show up... Melanix. Please take a seat." The teacher said, with an agitated tone.
It wasn't my fault I was late. It was moms. We were arguing as usual, which caused me and Luke, my brother to miss the bus. I hated my mom's house sometimes and wished I could live with my dad. My mom didn't seem to care once I turned 15. I was responsible for my life and the house because she would always be out late. I usually took care of myself. Hell, school wasn't much better. I had few 'friends' but they never seemed to care that much about me. Only Luke and Dad seemed to care about how I was doing. As I went from class to class; the day went by pretty quickly. The casual sitting alone at lunch, listening to music through my earbuds, not eating because my school's food was shitty anyway. I was going about my day when I was stopped and called to the counselor's office.
"Good afternoon, Miss Melanix. Please, have a seat." Ms. Susan spoke in a calm tone.
"Alright... is everything okay?" I asked, wondering why I was called down.
"Well, I wanted to speak with you about your home life and wanted to check up on you." She implied.
"W-well, it's just me and my mom. My dad and mom separated since they started arguing a lot more." I started, getting a little nervous because I never talked about this.
"I see, anything else to add?" She replied, she could sense my nervousness.
"I hate living with my mom," I claimed, "she is always out till late at night almost every night. She also doesn't watch over me and my little brother like she should. She fought so hard for custody of me but she doesn't seem to love me like she used to." My voice was cracking like firewood.
"Melanix.. I'm sorry you are going through this," Ms. Susan said, "is there anything else?"
"N-no, thank you for your time though." I got up and left before I broke down sobbing.
As I walked to my locker to grab my stuff for my next class, I was called to the main office. My dad was there to pick me up and I was so happy I could cry. I got to see my little brother again for the first time in years.
We get in my dad's car and he looks at me like he was happy to see me, but he was upset at the same time. I didn't ask until we got home.
"Mel... something awful happened to your mom, she is in ICU right now." He sighed, looking sorrowful.
"Oh.." I paused.
Suddenly my world had paused. Everything went quiet and suddenly I felt something like someone had taken a knife and stabbed me 50 times. Sure, my mom and I had our days and sometimes I hated her but I never meant it. I wouldn't do that to someone ever. This was my fault. I drew this upon myself. I was the only one to blame for her being in the hospital right now.
"Hey.. are you ok sis?" Luke pulled on the sleeve of my school uniform since he couldn't quite reach my shoulder since we was a bit smaller than me.
"Yes, I'm fine and I'm sure mom will too. Don't worry too much." I said while messing up his hair.
"Hey Mel, you will be staying with me until further notice." Dad stood at the end of the hall, looking sympathetic towards us.
After some time, me and Luke were in our shared bedroom because my dad lived in a two-bedroom apartment which was better than nothing. Hell, it was better than staying alone. Having to watch over Luke, not that I minded but it would be so quiet. I never minded staying with my dad either. I never got to see him much so it was nice when I could.
Before we had dinner, there was a knock at the door from someone and Dad quickly got up and got the door.
"Good evening sir, is Melanix here? I'd like to speak with her if you don't mind." The man asked.
"Yes, I'll go get her." Dad replied as he called for me.
As I speed walked down the hallway, I instantly recognized the man as panic rushed through my veins. How did he know where I lived? Should I call the police?
