As I approached the door, a sense of worry washed over me like a huge wave. I knew who the man was at the door, and he had this fake ass smile on his face. He may have bullshitted my dad, but he won't bullshit me.
"Mel, everything alright?" Dad questioned, snapping me out of my thought.
"Y-yeah everything is fine." I replied calmly.
I stepped outside and when my dad walked away from the door, all emotion dropped from my face as I stared straight into his eyes. This man was someone I hated inside out. I could barely call him a man, Thomas Lock. He had done so many things to me and the time he tried to-
"Ahem, we have some unfinished business to take care of bitch." He spoke.
"Name calling, are we? Wow." I replied, I knew what this meant.
"Look, I'm not explaining here, meet me at City Stone Lake at 5pm tomorrow. don't be late." He snapped.
"Why can't you just explain here? It can't be that bad right?" I questioned.
"Don't make it difficult." He spoke, sounding irritable.
"Fine, I'm going back inside." I snapped, then quickly went inside before he could say anything else.
Later, we had dinner and Luke talked about his school day and how he missed mom and hoped she got better. Honestly, I mostly tuned out what they spoke about and tried to process how I was going to tell my dad that I'd be out late. He wouldn't believe me if I said I had joined a club, or was going to a friend's house, but he may believe one thing.
Before we left for school which wasn't far from the apartment complex, I told dad that I was taking Luke to see mom, which I would. He said it was okay and that we needed to see her. After that conversation, we started heading for the school which was about a 5-minute walk.
After arriving, I spotted Lock and thankfully we didn't make eye contact. However, I saw this new girl I hadn't ever seen before. She had black hair and wore our school uniform which I thought was tacky and outdated. Within a split second I saw her start walking towards me, gesturing as a rather kind soul.
"Hello, I'm new." She said, "My name's Elle and you are?" She asked.
"Oh, I'm Melanix, but you can call me Mel." I replied.
There was something off about her. She seemed nice but there was just something about here that didn't sit right with me. I don't know what it was, but I'm sure I'd find out.
"Well, that's the bell, I should be going." She said as she rushed off to her 1st period.
As I sat in 1st period, I thought about her and how strange she was. I couldn't figure out what the hell the strange thing about her was. Was it her abnormally pale skin? Was it her demeanor? I thought it through before I lost my train of thought when the teacher called me unexpectedly.
"Melanix? Can you please tell me what the angles of the triangle are?" Ms. Gaya questioned.
"It's 60°." I replied, hoping I was right.
"That's correct, onto the next question." She said as she turned back to the board.
After what seemed like an endless stir of classes, it was time for lunch. I usually sat in the library or study hall for lunch because I didn't like the school food. However, when I reached the library, there they were Thomas and Elle. Of course, if this didn't make things worse, they were flirting and was only her first day. How the fuck did he always get the new girls? It wasn't important but I couldn't stop myself from walking closer to them.
"Well, look who it is!" Thomas exclaimed, "You stay here for lunch too?" He seemed overjoyed, nothing like he was when he called me a bitch the day before.
"Um yeah, that's why I'm here." I replied with a bitter tone. "Might I ask what you're doing here? Where's your gang of fuckboys?" I snapped.
"Oh Mel-" Elle started but I wasn't having it today and cut her off.
"You know what, I'll say this once. Thomas Lock is the worst choice in this school." I started, my blood boiling. "He's an asshole and will play your ass like it's a game of chess and you my friend, will be the pawn." I stopped myself before anything else would happen.
I could see Thomas get up and start to walk towards me. I knew that I shouldn't have said that. After all, I was exposing him and that could ruin his great reputation here. He grabbed my wrist and practically dragged me outside of the library.
"You are a bitch. What the fuck is your problem with me?" He snapped.
"My problem? You know what you and your 'friends' did. You fucker. I'll never forgive you. You gave my family the impression that you were such a good boy when you literally sexually assaulted me and almost got to my brother. If I wouldn't have stepped in, god knows what would have happened." I snapped with tears filling my eyes.
"You are literally ruining my rep here which you almost did once. You are supposed to keep this a secret and never speak of it again. I'll make sure you never do." He spoke boldly.
"Fuck you, you did this to taunt me." I spat that out as the bell rang.
After school, I walked to the middle school and looked for Luke among the many students spilling out of the school. I eventually picked him out of the crowd, and we walked towards the hospital where mom was being kept until she got better. On our way there, we talked about our day and other random stuff.
When we approached the hospital, Luke looked at me with a saddened look like he suddenly regretted this decision to see mom.
"Hey little guy, everything ok?" I asked, I had never seem so upset to see her until now.
"Yeah, I just wish she wasn't in this situation." He said, tears quickly filling his eyes.
"Ok, just remember, she will be okay." I expressed, trying to be sympathetic.
We walked in and asked for Nora Laning, my mother's maiden name, and directed us to her room. We went up the elevator and eventually reached our mom's room.
"Mom!" Luke cried out and ran over to her bed.
"Hello Luke, and Melanix." She spoke, her voice weak and a little raspy.
"Hey mom, how are you doing? Dad suggested we come and see you." I claimed, even if it was my idea.
"Mel, I'm sorry for everything I ever said to you, I never meant it. I was in a bad place and I regret every fight." She spoke empathetically.
"Me too mom, I'm so so sorry." I could feel tension in the air and felt like she was about to tell me something bad.
"Melanix, I am dying, the doctors can't do anything else to help, my organs seem to be melting." She spoke.
"No, you're joking right? That isn't possible." I spoke in disbelief. I couldn't believe it. There is no way that could happen.
"No, I'm sorry." She started to tear up, as did I.
Luke saw us tearing up and asked us what was wrong and I told him I would tell him when we got home. I looked at mom's heart monitor as her breath started slowing and her heartrate started to go down.
"No, nonono Mom please." I cried, "Don't die on us now!" I started sobbing and Luke saw me crying and cried with me. He knew what was happening.
"I'm sorry my children, it's my time. I love you both." She said as she flatlined, leaving my bother and I to do nothing but cry, holding each other.
