The ground was blanketed in a thick layer of snow, ushering in the excitement of Karasuno's entire school. It'd been a whole year since they'd seen snow, though it only felt like a few weeks.
Karasuno's volleyball team poured outside as the snow came to a stop.
Nishinoya pushed his way to the front, jumping into a high pile of snow, yelling, "LAST ONE IN HAS TO CLEAN THE GYM TONIGHT!"
"NISHINOYA-" Daichi started to call, sighing as he watched Nishinoya jump into the snow. "He's going to get a cold if he keeps being this reckless."
"Let him have some fun, Daichi-san. He's been working extra hard recently, with the next game coming up," Hinata chimed, fixing the hat on his head.
"We could all use a little relaxing fun, Daichi," Sugawara added, looking back at them.
He leaned down, grabbing a handful of snow, and tossed it at Daichi, hitting him in the chest.
Everyone on the team (save Nishinoya, who was already making a snow angel, some dozens of feet away) froze, watching the third years. After a few painfully silent moments, Asahi walked towards Daichi to try and stop him from getting mad.
Instead, Daichi tossed his head back and let out a laugh.
"Good one, Suga. Watch your back today, yeah? Everyone else, keep an eye out. This could mean war. Otherwise, relax and have some fun."
"YEAH!" Tanaka yelled, running over and jumping into the snow next to Nishinoya, covering both of them in snow.
Hinata, having been lingering in the back by himself, gave a quick cheer, before running past Kageyama and Ennoshita to the piles of snow.
"COME ON, LET'S MAKE A SNOW TINY GIANT!" he exclaimed, jumping excitedly.
"I don't wanna do that," Kageyama mumbled under his breath. "I'd rather be inside, practicing for the match."
"For once, the King and I can agree on something," Tsukishima mumbled, fixing his headphones.
"Will you stop calling me the King?" Kageyama all but snarled.
He glared at Tsukishima, debating on shoving him into the snow. He thought it over for a full count of three, took a deep breath, and walked out to help Hinata build his snowman.
"I don't understand why you need to keep picking fights with him, Tsukishima," Ennoshita muttered, shaking his head. He headed over to sit with Narita and Kinoshita on the stairs, quietly complaining about their underclassmen.
"Don't listen to him, Tsukki," Yamaguchi stated, keeping his normal spot next to Tsukishima. He rubbed his hands together to keep them from freezing off. His gloves were doing nothing to help him, and he really wished they could go back inside soon.
"I didn't plan on it, Tadashi," Tsukishima answered quietly, turning his headphones up and heading to sit against the vending machines, where there was no snow and no volleyball players.
Yamaguchi quickly followed after him, not seeing anything better to do and not wanting to leave his best friend to his own devices.
Everyone continued about their joyous activities, paying attention not to the future but to the present and everything in front of them.
Hinata and Kageyama bandied as they built their snowman, laughing occasionally when the other slid or fell. In a season miracle, they worked together and kept from killing each other. They used Hinata's hat and Kageyama's scarf to decorate their tiny giant, beaming brightly when he was finished.
Nishinoya and Tanaka continued to roll around in the snow until they couldn't feel any parts of their bodies, laughing as they struggled to get themselves up. They'd told each other that once they had regained feeling in their arms, they would be able to do this again. Not yet, though, as they both feared losing their fingers before the season was over.
Asahi walked around the school, taking in all the sights he could've possibly seen. He loved the smell of winter and the coldness and everything else. He felt calmest as he walked with silence (save his underclassmen yelling at each other in the distance).
Tsukishima and Yamaguchi stayed seated near the vending machines, silently texting each other instead of talking. It was easier that way, especially since Tsukishima refused to take his headphones off. He said it was because he didn't want to hear everyone else's voices, but Yamaguchi suspected it was because his ears were cold, but he didn't want to admit it.
Kinoshita, Narita, and Ennoshita talked quietly about school (among many other minor topics, of course), staying splayed out on the steps in front of the gym. They discussed the recent exams they'd had and how fortunate they were to have good studying skills, or else they'd be down a pastime.
Daichi and Sugawara walked around, occasionally stopping to check on the rest of their teammates. They'd called a peace treaty for a while. Suga had assumed Daichi hadn't truly meant his threat earlier and disregarded it.
As Suga leaned down to pick up a stick in the snow, he got hit with a large ball of snow on his side.
He inadvertently let out an "oof", looking up to see a smiling Daichi with a handful of snow.
"I told you to watch your back," he stated.
"Oh, shit," Sugawara muttered, scrambling to grab a handful of snow. He tossed it at Daichi without even bothering to make it into a ball.
Daichi tossed the ball in his hand at him, knocking Suga in the shoulder.
Suga scooped up an armful of snow, stumbling backwards with a large grin on his face.
"HEY! Watch where you guys are—"
Before he knew it, Suga crashed backwards into a large mass of snow, sending Hinata into a half-hysterical cry.
"NO! Tiny snow giant! How could you?" he asked Suga.
"I'm sorry, Hinata; I'll make it up to you. But he's after me."
"Jeez, Suga, are you okay?" Daichi asked, extending his free hand to Sugawara to help him up.
As Suga grabbed onto his hand, they both got hit with snowballs.
"Who-?" Daichi started, looking in the general direction of where they had been hit.
"KIYOKO-O-O!" Tanaka yelled, stumbling through the snow to go and hug their team manager.
Kiyoko stepped aside, watching as Tanaka launched himself into the snow, face first. She studied him to make sure he was still alive, then turned to the team members that were in her field of vision and earshot.
"Coach Ukai and Mr. Takeda brought hot chocolate from the store. If you want a cup to warm up before heading home, please go help yourselves," she stated, wiping gently at a circle of fog on the bottom of her glasses.
"HOT CHOCOLATE!" Hinata exclaimed, kicking through the snow to bolt inside. "YOU LOST, KAGEYAMA!" he called back to Kageyama, who stood angrily.
"YOU DIDN'T TELL ME IT WAS A RACE, BOKE!" he yelled, sprinting towards the gym.
"PLEASE BE CAREFUL!" Daichi exclaimed. Seeing as neither of them listened, he sighed, shaking his head. He pulled Sugawara up, wiping off some snow from his jacket, starting to walk inside.
"I swear, sometimes, it's like trying to bring children out into public. We can't do anything with these first years."
