"You gotta be faster than that !!" Alex called from an unknown point in the corn field. The corn stalks had to be at least 6 feet tall. Giant leaves grazed my arms, and the tops of the stalks doubled me in size. "Wait up Alex, short legs compared to long legs doesn't make for an equal pace!!!". I ran after her, zigzagging through the tall stalks. As I caught up to Alex, her bright blonde hair gleamed in the setting sun. Her hazel eyes sparkled. Everything about her was beautiful. I always had envied her. Everyone at V.Andrew high school had seen her as perfect. I, on the other hand, was described in a term as "odd". My shyness and lack of social nohow gave off that impression, along with my "odd" style choices and my "odd" hobbies. I wasn't like the other people at my school. Everyone gave of the southern vibe, where I gave off the hippie vibe. Everyone, including Alex, wore daisy dukes and cowboy boots. I wore baggy sweatshirts and headbands around my forehead. I was the school wierdo, and everyone envied me, because Alex was my best friend.
As Alex walked through the corn stalks, she was describing her new boy toy, Bryson. The typical southern prince charming. He was varsity quarterback, and the most handsome guy in school. I had a boyfriend, but he was different. He was perfect. Johnathan was his name. He had a great sense of nohow when it came to people. He was the other "odd" person in our school, so we automatically kind of bonded.
I thought about Johnathan a lot, Hoping to see him tonight. He usally sneaked through my window at least twice a week. I knew in my heart he was mostly made for me. Being honest , Bryson and Alex would probably last a month or two at the latest. She moved through relationships like the seasons changed. I, on the other hand, have had one boyfriend, which was, and still is Johnathan. Johnathan had one girlfriend before me, so we were both equally confused on how to make the relationship fun, which was fun in itself, and most of the time, being with Johnathan was heaven.
I usually told Alex what was going on with Johnathan and I, and she would put in her usual commentary on how " we were too good to be true" or how "we have been together too long for spontaneous fun", but what she didn't know was that everything about us was spontaneous, and unexpected. She didn't know what love was, but I did, and the feeling was perfect.
After Alex had finished her long description of how Bryson was perfect and such, we ventured back to my house, to discover that the house was empty. As I walked into the kitchen, a handwritten note was posted on the refrigerator. It read "Elyse, Aunt Meril had an emergency up in Arkansas, and we trust you enough to stay home. We plan to be back next Tuesday, we will text with updates. Be safe.
Love mom and dad
P.s there's 100 dollars for food, and remember to lock the doors.
"Dude you're so lucky! I wish my mom and dad would trust me enough to stay home for 5 days alone."Alex said as she grabbed her keys and school bag. "Girl I'm out of here. I'll call you when I get home." She card as she walked out of the door. "OK!" I yelled as she closed the door behind her. By this time it had to be at least 9 at night, so I proceeded to lock windows and doors. I grabbed some noodles and some juice, and ran up the steps to my bedroom.
I threw on a flannel and some shorts , grabbed my noodles off of my desk, along with my remote, juice and phone, and hopped on my bed . I flipped on the TV and switched over to the news. The weather looked sunny for the rest of the weekend, except for the slight change of a storm tonight. I started eating my noodles and realized I had forgot to crack my window. I got up , and I noticed my window was already open . I didn't remember opening it, but I thought nothing of it, considering I lived on a small farm 3 miles from the nearest sign of life.
As I turned around to sit back down on my bed, an arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me back towards my window. I'm pretty sure I screamed loud enough for the whole world to hear. The sound of Johnathon's laughter muffled my screaming.
"Did I scare you ?" Jonathan said with a wicked smirk.
" no, not at all. I was just screaming from excitement." I said sarcastically as he kissed my cheek.
"Where are your mom and dad ? The car's gone ." he said looking out the window
" Something happened with my aunt and they had to go up to Arkansas. They'll be back on Tuesday." I responded as I sat down on my bed. Johnathan sprinted and jumped on my bed, semi landing on my legs and erupting into a fit of laughter. He looked so cute, it made my stomach fill with tiny little butterflies. His black hair came across his eyes ever so slightly. He could pull off jeans and a flannel so well. I just couldn't stop staring at him .
"What are you staring at? Do I look bad or something?" He said when he caught me staring at him. I gave him the most atrocious look I could give him .
"Are you kidding me?! You look ... Perfect." I said with astonishment. He looked breathtaking . no words could even describe his radient smile. He was gorgeous. Before I could even process what I was doing, I was up over him, planting my lips on his. He was everything, my world felt complete with him in it, and he knew this, because with swift action, he pushed me back on my pillows, and kissed me, with what seemed like all of the force in the world. I knew he would never push me past my limits, because he respected me. It was amazing . He knew my wants, my needs, my everything. As I got situated, he moved over and and put his arms around my waist .
"Cuddling is only fun with you." He spoke softly into my ear. I wish I could stay in this moment forever.
"Everything feels perfect" I said as I turned into his arms and gently laid my head on his chest. It was the literal definition of bliss. I started to fade in and out of consciousness, until I was awoken by the nearby wail of sirens and Johnathan's frantic eyes.
"Elyse, wake up we have to get down to the basement now. There's a tornado coming. It hit the county next to us. We have to hurry. " His voice was frantic, and scared.
We ran downstairs to the kitchen and grabbed the flashlights. I grabbed anything of importance or memory, and he grabbed some food . we didn't know how long we'd be down there .
The sirens got louder and louder. I felt like there was chaos, even though there was only 2 of us. I threw the basement door open and he swiftly followed. He closed it as I turned on the radio in the corner where we usually went during tornado warnings . The sirens got louder and the wind knocked against the house. I turned into Jonathan's arms and hoped to god we would make it out alive, and then, as the wind howled. And the sirens cried...everything went black.
