______________________________________Sounds of papers being flipped...
A finger tapping on the hard surface of the table.
A fan blowing wind to cool the room and a telephone ringing, waiting for someone to pick it up.
It was a quiet and boring day at the firm for Atsumu, a famous Japanese lawyer known for having a 99.9% win rate in the field of court and law.
Atsumu is known to be very competent in his field of profession and his colleagues admire him for his principles and discipline when it comes to court and defending as well as giving justice to the cases that fall upon his hands.
He just wished that his family saw him the same as how these strangers see him.
Admire him just like how these strangers treat him like a good role model.
He longed for those eyes to light up with the sight of him. For the look of approval, he spent all his life trying to earn. But rather, he was dubbed as the "Talented Incompetent Takahashi" by his relatives. And all because he was adopted.
He should have been used to it by now, after all, at the age of five, he grew to learn the truth about his identity.
How his biological parents, the Miya's, were forced to give him away in exchange for his twin brother, Osamu's, heart surgery.
He was adopted by a rich couple who couldn't conceive a child as the husband was impotent while the wife has cervical insufficiency. The Takahashis.
Mr. and Mrs. Takahashi were rich and wanted a son, not for the purpose of love, but to have a perfect doll that they could show off to their friends and business acquaintances. For show.
And Atsumu just so happens to be that perfect doll. Raised to play different instruments like violin, piano, guitar, and other traditional instruments. He was also thought to speak in different languages, forced to be social and useful. Placed on a high pedestal like a beautiful marble statue for greedy people to sightsee.
Even so, Atsumu grew up kind with a golden heart that he wore in his sleeves.
Instead of getting mad at his biological parents and despising his twin who was the reason for everything, he understood their side and even helped them from time to time, developing a close bond just like a real family. Because they are his real family.
He guesses that was all that matters. His biological family loves him and still treats him as their son and brother so he doesn't complain.
It goes the same for his adoptive parents. His father and mother. Instead of complaining and holding a grudge and asking why they treat him like some trophy, he looks on the bright side.
Thanking them for raising Atsumu and bringing him to his success. Leading him to where he stood now. Above all, higher than anyone else could ever reach.
He guesses that is fine and he rather live this way than any other.
He was content like this.
Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted as someone bursts inside the firm, stirring everyone's attention to the person in charge of the sudden scene.
Atsumu tilts his head in confusion as he saw his bestfriend, Oikawa, the cause of the sudden outburst, make his way to him with a rather agitated expression plastered on his face.
"Are you alright, Kawa?" He asked voice laced with concern for his friend.
Oikawa subtly places a brown folder onto Atsumu's desk and the latter looks at it questioningly.
"What's this?" He asks as he took the folder and looks up at his friend.
"New case, and the client wants you to take it..." The other replies.
Atsumu raises a brow in confusion. He takes different cases all the time. It stretches from abuse of power, corruption, and other political issues, as well as domestic ones too, so he doesn't get why Oikawa looks so agitated as he came bursting inside and handing the file to Atsumu. It's not like it's anything new.
But as soon as he scans through the case file, his eyes widen by surprise and he almost drops the folder.
He looks at Oikawa with shock and he almost trembles. "A case against a mafia?" Atsumu asks Oikawa, horror written in his face.
Oikawa gulps and nods slowly. "The client has been working on this case for years now Atsumu, they said they gathered enough evidence and power to put this mafia in prison..."
Atsumu only sat there listening to Oikawa while still processing what was about to happen.
"They need help from someone competent enough to take this case. That's you, Atsumu."
Atsumu's eyes widened in horror. "I...I..." He fumbled for right words to say, but none came out.
Sure he was someone, if not the only one fit to take the case. But against a mafia? It was too much for Atsumu to comprehend.
A mafia. A powerful one at that. And Atsumu was chosen to fight against it.
Before he could speak, Oikawa took both of his hands with his and looked at him with desperate pleading eyes.
"Please Atsumu! I, myself, had been working on this case for so long as well. We can finally put an end to this, all we need is you and your skills to win this!"
Atsumu pursed his lips as he gazes softly at his best friend.
********
"The prosecution may call its first witness!" The judge's voice echoed throughout the courtroom.
Atsumu sighs as he adjusts the cuffs of the sleeve of his suit.
"This is going to be a long day..." he thought as the trial commences.
