The Woodland's corridor was filled with its usual noise. The sound muted down the cabins where people had begun and ended their life's journey. Mourning the death of a loved one or celebrating the birth of new lives over the course of years.
This building has been a standing remembrance of the battles had fought inside and outside this establishment. Not only theirs but the doctors and staff worked tirelessly with a smile on their faces. To cure everyone regarding their social status, racial background, financial status all the time, was their motto. They only treat the body of the human being. That is all they are to them bodies needed to be treated.
Then why when it comes to the treatment of someone close to them, bodies became faces and faces become relationships? Why is this hospital supposed to treat everyone with smiles on their faces now hesitant the deliver the outcome of one of their own? As the seventh day passed on ventilation, Christopher asked himself the safe question. What a failure he would feel himself to be if he cannot save the only person his brother truly loved? How will he face him and not feel guilty?
How will he face his wife and tell her he had failed her as well? That he couldn't save her best friend who she considered to be her family, her sister? No one has that answer for him. No one knows exactly when she will be showing signs of recovery or if she will ever show any signs of recovery. Christopher looked out of his glass window from his office. Not knowing what else he can do. His medical board to have no answer for this. Even his wife doesn't have an answer for it.
He heard the door open and saw Eros walking in. "For how long you are going to beat yourself about this Chris?" He asked. "All of it was my fault. The lives I have tangled with mine are at risk because of me. I don't know what had I done wrong to deserve it." He asked more to himself than to Eros.
"You have done nothing wrong, you just pissed off the wrong crowd that is it." He shook his head. "And at the end, it all comes down to me. All over again isn't it? Like the last time, Kelly almost shot my wife standing in this same room. Now another girl I do not know even properly shows the same rage."
"I see we are stuck in the cyclone and you are the eye of the storm. But you have no idea why is that it?" Christopher didn't like the analogy but Eros was right whatever it was Christopher was in the middle of it. And he didn't know why he was in the middle of all of it. "It is connected to me and before something else happens to someone I need to know what is it that connects me to all this." Eros knew very well that his friend was very right. But how can he admit it to his face?
"Suck it up Woodland, she is going to be very fine. Or your brother will jump to his death from this very window. You can join him afterwards." "This isn't funny Ramon, this is Disha we are talking about," Christopher said.
"Exactly, this is Disha we are talking about. The reaper will be afraid of her. She is the iron lady of the group. And you are thinking a bullet is enough to take her out?" Eros asked. "I don't know Ramon, why she isn't waking up? Why is she still on ventilation? I don't know what..." Eros saw Valentino walk in.
"He is here, isn't it? Like clockwork? My brother loves her too much. The only thing he is serious about. The one thing he didn't want to lose. I cannot give him that too. I am pathetic. I am..." Eros slapped him hard. "Don't ever say that Woodland. You aren't pathetic, you are sorry to say one of the most brilliant minds I know of this century. Pathetic doesn't cut it out. We will figure it out alright and we will also figure out what that blondie wanted with you."
"Will we? Why do I find myself asking this same question again and again? If we can. If we will. Everything is so based on if. When I have taken this from my father, all I wanted was to save some lives, I was an optimist then, now..." Christopher paused looking at Eros"I am not sure if I have that faith and the optimism. I am done. I have nothing left to give." He sounded defeated. "No Woodland you are not a quitter. If you do quit, I am sure I will be more than happy to take Pia away for a little..." Christopher pinned him against the wall.
"Don't you dare go there; she is my wife." Eros laughed. "There you go, and you say you aren't passionate about anything anymore. There is your passion and your motivation. Now, get out there and do what you do best Chris, save people." Eros said softly. "Do not doubt over this, this is what you were made for and this is what you shall be doing." He pushed the door open.
"Let's go and save some lives shall we Woodland?" Christopher took his coat and stethoscope and walked out after him. He is right, Christopher was a doctor first, then he is anything else. So, nothing shall deviate him from one thing he had always vowed to do. Save lives and make people smile. And he is going to do that at any cost.
