Chapter One

‘Ah. Peace.’ Briar thought as she stepped out of her car. She smiled to herself as she checked the surroundings. The school was quiet. Probably because the students are already inside, rushing to their classes.

Her former school, Shanterburry High, was only a few miles away. However, she can tell that this school and her former school had A LOT of differences.

“Are you gonna be alright, Young Lady?” her butler told her.

Briar looked up and smiled as the rays of the sun reached her eyes. “Yes.” was her simple reply.

Looks like former queen bee finally found what she wanted. And transferring to Rosewood High is just the start of it.

.

She walked through the entrance door  of Rosewood  with a big smile on her face. She was very excited, yet nervous at the same time. Students were staring at her so she smiled at them. ‘Probably because I’m new’ she thought to herself. She went directly to the Principal’s office and asked for her schedule.

“Ah, Ms. Winterford! A pleasure having you here.” the principal, Ms. Woods, said as she handed Briar her schedule.

“Thank you, Ms. Woods.”  Briar replied. Then headed to her first class.

.

Everyone stared at her as she faced her first period classmates.

“Is this Calculus? Are you Mr. Adams?” she asked the teacher, nervousness evident in her voice, as she stood by the door.

“It is. I am. You’re late.” the teacher replied, looking away from the board.

“I’m sorry. I had to go the office to get my schedule and search for my class.” Briar explained.

The teacher faced the class as he said, “Everybody, welcome Briar Winterford. She just transferred here today from Shanterburry High.”

Hearing the said school had everyone chit-chatting. “Isn’t that the high-class elite school we were talking about the other day?” “I heard they use touch screen boards!” “They even have maids inside their classroom!”

‘They think we have maids? What kind of rumor is that?’ she thought.

Briar smiled to her classmates as she politely bowed in front of them. “Hello everyone! Please treat me well!”

“I’m sure they will, Ms. Winterford. My name is Sean William Adams, I am your Calculus teacher. Pleasure to meet you.” Mr. Adams said. “Now why don’t you take a seat beside, Mr. Smith and copy the notes on the board.”

‘Did he just say copy?’ Briar thought. “You want me to copy all of that?”

“Why yes.” Mr. Adams replied as he continued writing on the board.

“Can’t you just give it to me like a book?” Briar asked, surprised.

“Unfortunately, Rosewood High isn’t as rich as Shanterburry High. We couldn’t afford books for all the students.” he said. “Mr. Smith, please raise your hand so that Ms. WInterford knows where she will sit.”

A boy with blonde hair and blue eyes raised his hand. “Over here” he spoke.

Briar then proceeded to her seat and took out her pen and notebook from her bag.

“Pst.” She heard someone say. She looked at her right and saw the boy who raised his hand a while ago. “Welcome to Rosewood, Briar. My name is James Smith.” He said as he smiled at her.

“Hello, James.” Briar replied.

.

Briar stared at the cafeteria, holding her food tray. “Oh gosh. This is the part where the students ignore me for being the new girl” she muttered to herself.

“Hey Winterford!” someone shouted from behind her. She spun around and found James sitting on one table with four other people. “Come sit over here!”

Briar didn’t know what to do. It’s either ignore him and find somebody else to hang out with or sit with James and his friends.  She decided to do the latter.

“Hey.” She said, once she reached the said table. James moved one chair so that Briar can sit on it.

“Hey. Glad you decided to sit here.” James replied, chuckling. “You look nervous.”

“Was I that obvious?” she asked, embarrassed.

“Hell yeah. Don’t worry it’s your first day anyway.” He reassured her.

Their conversation was interrupted by a cough.

“James, when will you introduce us?” a girl with blonde hair said.

“Oh right! Guys, this is Briar Winterford. She’s from Shanterburry High.” James said.

“Hi Briar! I’m Via Keys. And this is my boyfriend, Shane Grey.” The blonde girl said as she pointed to the guy with black hair beside her.

“Hello to you two. I hope we can be friends.”

“No problem, pretty thing.” Shane replied, winking.

“SHANE! STOP FLIRTING WILL YOU!” Via shouted at her boyfriend.

“Chill, Via. I was only kidding.” He replied, chuckling.

“Don’t mind those two.” James whispered to Briar. Briar gave him a nod.

“Sorry about my twin sister’s outburst. Hi, I’m Ian Keys.” A guy with brown hair said.

“Twin sister? You guys don’t look alike though.” Briar asked, confused.

“Oh. That’s because I dyed my hair brown. We look alike when I had blonde hair back then.” Ian explained.

“Ohh. Nice to meet you, Ian.” Briar replied, smiling.

“Hello there, Briar! I’m Leila Everdeen” a brunette said, “I hope we can be best friends!”

“Nice to meet you, Leila.” Briar said.

"Well, I hope you have a wonderful time here. It might be different from Shanterburry but I'm sure you'll have fun." Leila told Briar.

Briar smiled at her. She did hope that what Leila told her will come true. But what she didn't know is that fate is ready to play a game...soon.
