Chapter 2
CHAPTER 2
Briar got back from school to return in her ever so excessively large, queen's mansion. As she entered the gate, rows of maids and butlers greeted her with 'Welcome back, master.' She didn't feel like greeting them back or rather, she was tired, from her first day of school, which included pop quizzes, annoying teachers, and requirements especially for new students. Her hand felt numb from writing all those notes, which she wasn't used to.
Her servants served her a dinner fit for a feast, as usual, as she only favoured the soup. She went to her room immediately afterwards, and rested. Hoping that tomorrow wouldn't be such of a burden since she made this choice to herself, to transfer schools.
'Everything will be alright,' she thought to herself as she closed her eyes.
-------
It was morning in class. Some students dazed off in physics. James was reprimanded for copying answers in a quiz and for laughing at the teacher's accent. Petty incidents made Briar's day quite peaceful. Time passed, and lunch came. She was grateful for having James introduce her to his pack of friends, especially considering the fact that it's harder to make friends in school if you're a transfer student . In lunch they proceeded to their table yesterday, with the Keys twins, or as James would joke at it, the not-so-twin keys, Via and Ian.
"I can't believe I share the same face with someone as disgraceful as you, Ian." Via frankly commented, as if it was usual thing to insult her brother.
"Oh, I feel the very same thing, my dear sister. Surely someone as hateful as you wouldn't be related to the likes of me." Ian backfired, smiling sarcastically.
"Would you two stop it? C'mon. You're fighting in front of Briar." Shane tries to eat his lunch peacefully.
"Aw, but you do know I'm correct, right, darling?" Via makes a puppy expression.
"Puh-lease. We know how fellow bros feel, right, Shane?" Ian adds, moving his chair closer to Shane who sits in between.
Briar tries hard not to giggle over the cartoon-like expression the twins are portraying. James suddenly whispers her something
"Looks like Shane's the boyfriend of both of 'em." Briar laughs, thankfully the twins don't notice as they continue to bicker. Trying to ignore the twins and their fight over Shane, Leila pops up a question.
"So, Briar! Tell us about your old school..."
The group suddenly becomes quiet, waiting for her answer.
"Well, it's not all that special like everyone says..." Briar answers as she trails off.
"....Bet Briar's just shy." Ian said.
"There's nothing to be shy about! Is it true that instead of books, you guys get tablets?" Via said.
"Well... Yeah, but that's just 'cause of the money. Besides, I bet that compared to the people here, the attitudes of students over there were crap." Briar's not sure of what to say next after that.
"Is that why you transferred schools?" James asked.
Awkward silence.
"Anyway, even though we have tablets, there's a gigantic library for book reports, thesis, reference, y'know. For a bunch of stuff." Briar says.
".....Uh, you guys gonna eat?" Leila asks James and Briar.
"Oh, right. We just got here." James stands along with Briar and walks toward the lines of the cafeteria.
"You know... If you don't want to talk about Shanterburry, it's ok." James said, looking ahead as Briar steals a glance at his face. "Thanks, James." She smiles at him.
"Regardless, if you just need a bunch of idiots to talk to and share something about your mysterious life, we got your back." He looks at her jokingly.
"Make that 5 idiots and a genius." Shane suddenly appears behind of them.
"Why, thank you for the compliment, Mr. Grey. I appreciate your words." James gestured.
"I wasn't talking about you, Mr. Corny. I was talking about Ms. Winterford, right here." Shane looks at Briar.
"Huh?" Briar looks oblivious.
"Oh yeah, I copied your answers in that quiz, and all of them looked correct to me." James said as Shane rolls his eyes.
"How could an answer 'look' correct, James?! Anyway, Mr. Adams was one of the teachers who saw your entrance exams. He mentioned in our class he never saw a paper with so many check marks in his life." Shane says.
Briar forces to change topic. "So... why'd you leave the table? Tired of the twins fighting over you?"
"Nah, when I'm tired, sometimes Leila's in the middle. I swear those two will fight over whoever sits between them. Literally. I'm just going to buy a drink though." Shane walks away, to the other side where more stores await customers.
"Be careful of Shane, by the way. He's the number 1 flirt here in Rosewood." James said, putting his hands in his pocket.
"But he has Via." Briar contradicts.
"That doesn't stop him from making the entire single female population of Rosewood fall for him." James half chuckles.
Lunch soon passes and Briar learned some things about her new friends. Ian dyed his hair because he didn't want to look like his sister. Over the past year, Shane had 11 girlfriends. James' highest score in English was an 89. Via was part of the cheerleader team and was voted Ms. Rosewood. Leila first entered the school with glasses. For Briar, they were pretty interesting people, and she wouldn't mind to be close to them all year.
The next subject was, apparently the worst. At least, that's what the students say about PE. The class changed their uniforms and proceeded to the gym. Where Briar saw a slightly muscular woman wearing jogging pants and a t-shirt complete with her whistle and notebook.
"Settle down, class." Her voice sounded convincing, or reprimanding. so the class lined up in front of her.
Obviously, Briar didn't know her name and quietly asked James for it. "It's Ms. Pattinson. She knows you're new... so..." He trails off and keeps quiet when he notices Ms. Pattinson eyes' lingers.
------
'I guess what James meant was Ms. Pattinson knew I was a transferee so she would be hard on me.' Briar thought, panting, as she just finished 10 laps around the campus along with her other classmates.
Surprisingly for her, James barely broke a sweat, stretching his arms and legs. "That was a nice run, huh Briar." He winks.
She looks unbelievably at him. "Dumbass in academics, number 1 in sports, huh, James. So that's what you are."
"What can I say. I'm superman without the brains." He brags.
"And the looks." Briar teases.
"Watch it, Winterford." James smiles.
The day goes on with book reports and assignments. School finally ends with her butlers picking her up. After dinner, she opens her laptop for the piles of homework her teachers have given. She stumbles upon emails. Emails that were sent by her ex-classmates from Shanterburry.
They were all stuff like 'We miss you Briar, come back!' or 'This isn't Shanterburry without you, Briar!' or 'Where did you go, Briar?'
She marked them as spam and tried to concentrate on her reports. After the homework spree, she decided to sleep like a log and forget all her problems. She turns off the light and drifts off.
