~~One Year Later~~

"Dr. Jayden Mills to the ED, please. Dr. Jayden Mills to the ED." Came the voice of hospital director Sherry Dykes over the intercom. I was currently in the middle of a discussion with an elderly lady about her position on the heart transplant list.

"Oh, it appears as if you have to go, doctor," she said sweetly. I sighed as I handed my iPad to the nurse next to me.

"Yes, I'm afraid so. Nurse Catherine will tell you more about you transplant and things to prepare for, alright?" I said. I then turned to the nurse and said, "If you need anything, just page me, okay?"

"Sure thing, Dr. Mills," she nodded.

"It was wonderful to talk to you today, Miss Yu," I said with a smile.

"Oh, please, Doctor, call me Harriet," she grinned back.

"Of course, Harriet, I'll be back soon, alright?" I said as I walked out of the patient's room. On my way from the cardiology department to the ED in Grand View Medical Center, I accidentally bumped into an elderly psychiatrist, Dr. Elijah Faust.

"Ah, if it isn't my favorite shrink," I joked when he abruptly stopped to see who had knocked him off his path. He smiled when he saw it was me.

"And if it isn't my favorite heart breaker," he winked.

"Ha ha, very funny," I said sarcastically. Dr. Faust chuckled and adjusted his wire rim glasses. His grey eyes glimmered when he laughed, something I liked about Elijah. He always knew how to connect to people, too. Guess he has to, considering he's a psychiatrist.

"Don't you have to be in the ED, Dr. Mills?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, shit, yeah," I said, collecting myself and beginning to run toward the ED.

"Oh, Jayden?"

I stopped and turned to look at the old doctor, who was looking down at his iPad.

"Yeah?"

"Stop by my office in a couple hours?"

"Yeah, I'll be there," I called as I continued to run to the ED. "Damn, this hospital is so big," I thought to myself. I mean, it is the largest hospital in New York City, and one of the busiest ones in the entire state. Honestly, this is the one of the best hospitals for doctors and nurses, considering we're always busy. I was worried I wouldn't be able to become a resident doctor, but apparently, I impressed the board of directors so much I was hired fresh out of med school. I actually interned at a hospital in Jersey during my last few years of med school, but when I heard of the benefits of working at Grand View, I had to apply here. Most every doctor and nurse here was pleasant to be around and seemed to enjoy working with me. And the cardiology department? Top of the line staff, equipment, monitors, basically everything.

My thoughts of the hospital were interrupted when I heard my name called from somewhere in the ED.

"Jayden!"

I looked around to see Sherry motioning for me in the waiting room. Confused, I walked over to her, only to see Gage and Damien, both in uniform, standing by her.

"Yeah?" I asked, warily, unsure of what news they had brought me. Gage cleared his throat and looked at Sherry. She sighed and made eye contact with me. The usually cheerful eyes were replaced with somber, sad eyes.

"What is it?" I tried again.

"Gage and Damien need you to come to the station with them," she said gravely.
