8:11- My feet start to hurt. But I don't complain. Dana is already stressed. There's no reason add more weight on her shoulders. "How long until we're at the house?" Beth complains. "About thirty minutes." Dana answers.
That's when I see it: a peice of fabric from the sweater mom was wearing when she left. It was a starry blue and it felt softer than silk. I tug Molly's shirt and point to it. She nods. I grab it and yell, "Hey! Mom's sweater fabric!" What else would I call it? I'm only four. "Are you sure Caleb?" Beth asks. "You know that could someone else's fabric." Dana nods in agreement. Let's see. What do I need to remember about mom that proves to them it's hers.Top 5 things I remember about mom
5. She has small ears and a big nose.
4. She made a mess wherever she is
3. She is a bad cook
2. Her favorite food is biscuits
1. She always smells like peppermintThat's it! I waft the fabric's scent towards my nose. It smells minty with a hint of gas. "But, it-" "It doesn't matter." Sammie interrupts. "Mom's all the way in Nashville. There is no way any of mom's items can travel over 100 miles." I nod. I squeeze the cloth into my pocket. I want to be the one who gives it to her. I can imagine it now: when we get there. Mom will be rummaging through her suitcase, looking for the cloth. After we hug and kiss, Sammie will say, "What are you looking for mom?" And she'll reply, "A cloth from my sweater." Then, Dana's jaw will drop as I hand her the cloth. It will be just like Cinderella, just different genders.
Cinderella is my favorite story. Mom and I would read it to me and Molly over and over again. Oh, I hope mom is alright.
