Sniffling, Nandini shook her head vehemently. In utter darkness, when it was getting colder, the sole source of illumination being a light bulb that seemed to be miles away, she was crouched down on her knees as he stood in front of her with his arms crossed. He was telling her to do the one thing she could never imagine in her wildest dreams. Peering at him with her dampened eyes, she said, "I can't do this. Please don't make me do this."

"You have to do it if you want to be my friend," he said, shrugging.

She looked down, tears spilling out of her eyes. "I can't touch it."

"Touch it."

"No."

"Touch it and kiss it."

"No."

"You have to touch it and kiss it."

"I am not touching it, and I sure as hell am not kissing it."

"You have to—"

"I am not—"

"Fine!" He stepped back. "You and I are not friends then."

Flailing her arms, she squealed, "This is preposterous. I don't want to touch it. My hands will get dirty. Ewwww!" She grimaced, peeking at the muddy tire of his trendy car. "I hate you, Aditya Roy."

Giggling, he said, "Touch the mucky tire, say sorry to my car, apologize for almost murdering it, and then kiss it."

"No!" She cried at the top of her voice, attracting the attention of a woman who was walking her dog. "Sorry," she mumbled when the woman glared at the two for creating a ruckus past midnight. Sniveling and wiping her nose, she expectantly peered at him. "Aditya, let me just touch it and apologize. If I kiss it, my lips will be dirty."

"I will provide you with everything to clean yourself. Don't worry." He leaned against the bonnet. "If you want to be my friend—"

"Fine!" she yelled. Crouching down, she brought her trembling fingers to the tire but retracted her hand at the last moment.

"Nandini!"

"Doing! Wait!" Taking a deep breath, she crinkled her nose before her fingers landed on the cool, rough surface, her nails finding the correct ridges so that she could pierce it to her heart's content.

"No damaging my car. I can see what you are doing."

Twisting her lips, she whispered to the tire, "I am so sorry, Aditya's baby, who was born out of wedlock because of the affection he has for his work."

"Nandini!"

She clicked her tongue at the sternness in his tone. "Okay, fine. Apologies, Car Baby. You are beautiful, and it was totally my mistake that day." Gulping, she bent down, puckering her lips.

He snickered behind his palms, unable to believe he had actually extracted an apology from her. As she grimaced, almost gagging, shutting her eyes, her pouted lips an inch away from the surface of the tire, he pulled her back by her shoulders. "That's enough. You don't need to kiss it."
