 Steele

Well, dang it all to hell. I'm standing in my kitchen looking at the calendar and I realize that I'm supposed to bring something to work for the potluck today I completely forgot. Now I'm scrambling like an egg on a sidewalk on a hot summer's day. I sit down to breakfast when I spot the ad for the new bakery in town. Saying a silent prayer of thanks to the good Lord above, I fold the newspaper and finish eating.

My daughter Presley, used to remind me about these things, but she's gone off to college now and I'm still getting used to being on my own again. It's moments like these that make me really miss having my daughter here at home with me.

I get into my dark blue pick-up truck and head to the bakery. Once we're downtown I realize finding a parking spot is going to be a challenge. There's already a line to get into the bakery. Nearly a block away I find a spot to park and I head to the store and get in line. The smell coming from the bakery is divine. Someone's baked peach pie, my personal favorite. My stomach rumbles at the smell and I think I might have to take a peach pie home with me.

The line moves quickly and soon we're inside the store assaulted by a multitude of smells. My mouth begins to water and as I look at the display cases filled with goodies, my stomach wants me to sample everything. I pick out an assortment of tarts for the pot luck and I do in fact, take a mouth-watering peach pie home for dessert. As I head back to the car I can't stop thinking about the woman at the counter in the bakery. Jet black hair, as dark as night, with the most piercing blue eyes I've ever seen. She's stunningly beautiful and it was hard to take my eyes off of her as I left the store.

I manage to make it to work with just a few minutes to spare. Firing up the computer, I head into the lunchroom and place the box of tarts on the table with the assortment of other goodies. There are no less than three crockpots cooking something that smells amazing and my mouth fills with saliva. I can't wait for lunchtime to roll around.
