Anthony held up his hands like he was surrendering as ice again covered my hands. I glanced around for the rest of his gang. I didn't see anyone, but they could be hiding nearby. There were no other civilians in the area as well. Good.
"I came alone, Felicity."
"Why are you here at all?" I demanded. "I'm giving you one chance to tell me the truth or else . . ." I gave the ice a little more power as it brightened and shot at Anthony, barely missing him. That should be a warning that I'm not messing around.
"OK, ok. I get it." His eyes were wide. "I came b-because . . . because the truth is-"
"Spit it out, Anthony!"
"I wanted to see you, all right? I said it." His hands dropped and he stared at the ground, not looking up at me. After a few quiet moments, he began to talk slowly. "I miss being with you. Holding your hand and walking to the movies in the park. I miss seeing your smile and kissing your beautiful face." He finally looked up and I could tell by the expression on his face that he meant every word.
His face grew from being as hard as a stone to looking gentle. I knew that as a sign that he was telling the truth. But one thing still bugged me. "Why?" I asked. He glanced up at me. "Why now? After all this time, you just come here, supposedly all alone, and just spring that on me?" I could feel tears coming to my eyes, but I quickly blinked them away.
"I'm sorry, Felicity. I-" He started, but I promptly interrupted.
"If you're truly sorry then why are you still working for Derek, Anthony?" I demanded. It was the one big question that had been on my mind since the day he came for me.
The wind died down and the chatter of tourists disappeared. All that mattered at this moment was his answer. I know when someone is lying or not. You could call it my other superpower and he knew I had it. So, will he give me another lie and excuse, or finally tell me why he betrayed me?
Several long, antagonizing minutes passed in complete and utter silence as Anthony and I peered into each other's eyes. His mouth opened and closed, but no words escaped his throat. I could feel all my emotions starting to bubble up to the surface once more, but I forced them back. I needed to be more attentive to my location in case this was an ambush.
I glanced at the bushes around us, expecting his men to jump out and grab me at any second, but a few more minutes passed and nothing. No men, no sound of sticks cracking or birds chirping, just Anthony and I.
"I'm sorry. I had no choice."
"You always have a choice! You broke my heart over and over again. Anthony, you deserve everything that is coming for you. You brought all this on yourself."
My hands illuminated brighter.
