Kyoka Jiro (~1,700 words)

Why are textbooks so heavy?

This was the one thought going through (y/n)'s mind at the moment. As they walked through the halls of UA High School, they were struggling to balance both an English textbook and an entire semester's worth of math lessons on their forearms.

As they continued to make their way down the crowded hallway, they made a turn and caught a glimpse out of a window facing towards the courtyard before the glass was again obscured by another student. Though brief, (y/n) managed to see a few snowflakes drifting past the window.

Winter.

Oh winter, the time of cold, wet, and exams.

Being a relatively good student, (y/n) normally didn't worry about exams and only had to actually set aside time to study outside of school on brief occasions. However, the end of the second semester was a whole new level. What felt like tons of paper were stacked up on their arms for a long after-school study session with some friends, and they weren't even sure if all of their friends could make it.

Byanka had made some possible plans and ever since Shinso moved to the hero course, (y/n) had been talking less and less with the boy. Luckily, Jiro would probably be there. She wasn't one to bail on plans.

Since school in Japan didn't get out for winter break until late December, the temperature had plenty of time to drop to just below freezing, offering light snow at the end of some school years. Why is this important, you may ask? Well it isn't. That's why (y/n) really didn't have an excuse to get so distracted by it, not even noticing how they had walked straight into another passerby.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry! Let me help you with that." Apologized a quiet voice.

(y/n) recognized the girl almost instantly by her characteristically straight purple hair.

"Mom's always saying not to listen to music so loud..." Trailed Jiro.

(y/n) smiled a bit, amused at how Jiro had not yet recognized them as well. After being friends for two years in middle school, you'd think that they'd have a closer friendship than they did. However, they had grown apart when Jiro had taken an interest in becoming a hero and began focusing more on her own goals.

"That's alright Jiro, it was my fault." (y/n) replied.

The look of confusion passed her features for a second, hastily replaced by one of recognition.

"O-Oh, (y/n)!" She slightly stammered, before turning her face away.

Though confused, (y/n) simply smiled and picked up the last of their books before springing back up to join the girl at eye level. Or, however close to eye level they could get. Jiro being just over 5 feet tall, (y/n) had to bend their neck slightly to look her in the eyes.

"So... are you coming to the library to study?" (y/n) said hesitantly, trying to ease the tension building up in the air.

"Oh, uhm, yeah. We can walk over there together if that's ok with you. I could also carry some of those textbooks..." Jiro responded.

"Yeah, sounds great."

Looking around for a second, (y/n) noticed that the halls were much emptier than they were before the exchange, meaning that school had officially ended and people were heading home or to their dorms. Calculating quickly, (y/n) decided that there were to be about 3 minutes of walking until reaching the library.

With Jiro carrying half of the load, they made good time to the library. (y/n) had to shift the weight of their books onto one hand to open the door, resulting in a thin workbook slipping off the top of their stack as they tilted their hands. Luckily, Jiro was able to save it from falling to the floor by rushing forward and catching the booklet on her stack. Now that (y/n) was thinking about it, why did general studies students even have so much work?
