IT IS SAID BY MANY THAT OUR FATE IS UNDETERMINABLE, that no matter how great we are today, we may fall and become nothing but dust tomorrow.

Yesterday, Talia Young was nothing. She was a 17 year old witch trying to get through school. Today, she is a 17 year old trying not to die by the hand of a thousand-year old vampire.

"BLOOD IS POWER, my mother used to say." Talia smiled sadly. "The first word she ever taught me was power. 'It runs through our veins', she would say." The book snapped closed. "I find it curious how all things in this supernatural world trace back to it."

She took a moment to consider it further, to ponder just how greatly blood linked everything. "I suppose that is why blood magic can be of the most potent."

"I wouldn't know," he butted in. "My mother was never one to partake in blood magic herself unless it regarded my brother's lycanthropy. She much preferred spirit magic."

Talia nodded, "A reasonable choice. A very powerful form of magic indeed, however, one is limited to performing magic that aligns with the will of the spirits."

"There are limitations to all forms of magic though, Talia." Kol rebutted.

"Touché," she said, the beginnings of a true smile reaching her lips. "Though, at least I know there are less stipulations to blood magic than most forms of magic."

Kol and Talia exchanged a look before coming to a silent agreement.

"I must say, I'm always curious what the blood of an original vampire could do," Talia spoke softly, her thumb traced the spine of the grimoire as she tucked it into the crease of her arm. "Not that I'm asking, but one can't help but be curious."

"I'd be curious too," Kol spoke, amused by how quickly she spoke as she swore she wasn't trying to acquire his blood, "Sure, a typical vampire's blood is good for spells, but an original would be like getting a much more efficient, higher capacity battery."

Talia raised a brow, "I'm surprised you know what a battery is. You've been asleep since long before modern technology."

He scoffed, "You can be a real ass sometimes, darling."

"It's the American in me."

TALIA YOUNG WAS ANYTHING BUT YOUNG. This world had stolen her youth and her happiness and given her nothing but pain and desolation. She was 17 and felt aged to a thousand with grief and sorrow.

The plight of a witch was to be so. This world would always take and take and take from a witch until she had nothing left to give. It would always steal from her all that she had and all that she was and leave her broken.

Talia knew though, she knew that as a witch, she rotted the moment she ripened.
