I was originally only going to write tgcf oneshots only but someone talked me into this 👀.
This extra is based on a mini-comic I saw on Pinterest that I can't find again or I'd give it credit 😭
Quick note for ease of readability - MDZS is written from a third-person limited POV. Sometimes I'll switch who the person narrating is (which I will indicate) so don't be confused if I say I'm shifting POV but you feel like the POV hasn't shifted, the only difference is I can only narrate the thoughts of the character whose POV I've chosen.
Hot. It was so hot Wei Wuxian wanted to die. A second time.
The cloud recesses were normally very temperate, even somewhat cold, which suited Wei Wuxian's taste immensely.
But for some reason today it was hot enough that he had to look down and check several times to make sure something on him wasn't burning without him realizing it.
To top off the miserable weather, Lan Wangji wasn't home with him in the Jingshi. He had gone off to deal with private sect matters, promising to pay Wei Wuxian back for leaving him alone for the greater part of the day. And he would definitely make sure Lan Wangji paid him back. Thoroughly.
With nothing better to do, Wei Wuxian decided he might as well be productive. The weather was too awful for him to even fool around today. He reached for the stack of yet to be graded papers and began sifting through them, lamenting at the many errors littered throughout the pages.
As he read through the essays, he had unconsciously loosened the sash of his robes, exposing a slight amount of skin in the hopes of some relief from the wretched heat. Since he had already gotten this far and Wei Wuxian was alone anyway, he shook off the top half of his robe entirely and used the sleeves to secure it around his waist, wrapping them twice.
Feeling much better about his predicament, he decided to finally take a break from grading after an arduous ten minutes of work. With a mischievous smile on his face, Wei Wuxian began snooping around. If he couldn't beat the heat, he might as well keep himself occupied.
The Jingshi before Wei Wuxian was incredibly tidy, with nothing out of place and not even a speck of dust to be seen. After his arrival, however, it was like a hurricane had passed through. (Especially if Lan Wangji hadn't had time to tidy up the place).
Because of this, Wei Wuxian found there were lots of things to look at as he wandered, occasionally picking up papers or little toys strewn across the floor to play with. He hadn't been snooping around for long before Wei Wuxian found something incredibly interesting.
Lan Wangji had left Bichen behind in the Jingshi. While normally every cultivator must carry their sword with them, Lan Wangji's responsibilities today kept him within the walls of the cloud recesses and it seemed he had no need for Bichen today.
Wei Wuxian walked over to the one clean corner of the Jingshi and wrapped his hand around Bichen's hilt. He pulled gently, coaxing the blade from its sheath and holding it in his hands. As he twirled Bichen in his fingers, Wei Wuxian had an epiphany.
It was scorching hot outside, and if he had learned anything about Bichen from past experiences, it was that Bichen was very cold. With this revelation in mind, he made his way over to the bed, stripping off his boots and pants as he walked before laying on top of the warm sheets, sword still in hand.
Wei Wuxian turned over and pressed Bichen to his chest, sighing slightly as the cool blade made contact with hot skin. This was nice.
He felt that his Hanguang-Jun had indeed been very considerate of him today despite them being apart.
Before, it had been too hot for Wei Wuxian to even dream of sleeping. But with a cold Bichen snuggled against his bare chest and the window propped open, he found that maybe he could make this work and closed his eyes, promptly falling asleep.
;-;;-;;-;;-;;-;
Lan Wangji arrived at the Jingshi in time with the sunset. The meeting had taken longer than he had expected and the quick stop he made had taken him longer still.
He was looking forward to getting back and spending time with his husband, his footsteps quickening without him realizing it. Lan Wangji transferred the emperor's smile he was holding from his right hand to his left, using his now free hand to open the door.
Rays of dying sunlight trickled in through the door behind him, illuminating the mess on the floor of the Jingshi. Lan Wangji sighed internally, thinking he would have to clean it up some other time so he wouldn't wake Wei Wuxian, who it seemed had chosen to take a nap to escape the heat.
Lan Wangji had half expected this and chose to keep his footsteps as quiet as a stalking cat. He walked over to their bedroom, where the window was propped open and faint sunlight trickled through. There was no place to set down the emperor's smile in his hands, so he simply held it as he walked, taking care to traverse the obstacle course Wei Wuxian had lovingly set for him in his mess.
Lan Wangji finally arrived at the entrance, taking only a moment to locate the sleeping figure atop the sheets. He promptly dropped the emperor's smile in his hands.
The scene before him made his hands twitch and his ears burn.
Wei Wuxian lay hugging Bichen, both shirtless and pantless. From Lan Wangji's position, he could make out Bichen's blue sheen from where it protruded from his barely-there clothes, appearing as though he was doing unspeakable things with it.
The crashing sound coming from the breaking jars of wine seemed to have roused Wei Wuxian, and the hair that had been covering him shifted slightly with his subtle movements, exposing his pale shoulders and neck. It seemed Lan Wangji's husband didn't feel like waking up just yet, and he curled around Bichen even further.
Lan Wangji was barely breathing, memories flooding in from a very similar situation, a very similar scene. He stepped foreword dazedly, reaching up with his now empty hands to the ribbon tied around his forehead and giving it a gentle pull.
It seemed Lan Wangji had lost his ability to maintain stealthy in the face of the great challenge before him and Wei Wuxian opened his eyes as he sensed someone approach.
;-;-;-;-;-;-;
Wei Wuxian sat up, blearily rubbing his eyes, and called out "Lan Zhan! You're home!"
Lan Wangji didn't answer at all, not even giving his traditional "Mn" in response.
Wei Wuxian seemed to notice something was terribly wrong. His eyes widened as he realized he was still clutching Bichen in his hands. "Lan Zhan! I can explain about Bichen. You see, today was very hot and your Bichen feels very cold, so I thought if I..." he trailed off.
Goosebumps erupted on Wei Wuxian's arms and he took in the expression on Lan Wangji's face. All of a sudden, he felt it was best if he stopped explaining and started running. "Ha-Hanguang-Jun, listen. It's not like that this time, I don't mean-".
He couldn't finish his sentence again, this time because Lan Wangji had cut him off, grabbing Wei Wuxian by the shoulders and shoving him down roughly. "Lan Zhan! I'm still holding Bichen, don't make me stab myself!"
His words seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. Just as Wei Wuxian was convinced he would die such a miserable death as being accidentally stabbed while being kissed, Lan Wangji ripped Bichen from his fingers and threw it to the side.
The Gusu-Lan sect's forehead ribbon once again found itself fully wrapped around Wei Wuxian's hands and he groaned, struggling to take it off.
To think, all of this had started because it was hot outside. All I wanted to do was cool off, Wei Wuxian thought miserably.
