The young girl coughed up more blood into the bucket, practically hacking her lungs out. The maid next to her gently wiped her mouth with a soft towel and pet her hair. The girl flopped back onto her bed, exhausted from her usual coughing attack. She seemed to have these once a day, each more violent than the last, for as long as she could remember. It always hurt but her mother explained to her that they were finding a cure soon. Just, how soon was soon? She was only 12 years old but it felt like she had heard the phrase, “Just a few more weeks, honey,” too often.
The maid grabbed the pot near her bed, the metal scrape snapping her out of her spiraling thoughts, and carried it out to the window, dumping the blood and vomit out. She quietly exited the room, most likely to wash the pot, and left the girl to her thoughts once more. Victoria, the girl, stood up weakly, still not recovered from the yacking. She wobbled as she stumbled towards her wooden dresser, clinging on to it to make sure she wouldn’t fall. She looked at herself in the mirror and was shocked at her own reflection. She was pale as milk and her veins were slowly protruding out, making her look slightly like a vampire. There were dark circles under her eyes and she seemed quite underweight.
The girl’s health condition had been worsening in the last few years, making it harder and harder for her to do simple, everyday tasks. As Victoria continued to examine her reflection, she slowly saw her eyesight go black, it overcoming her sight as she fainted and collapsed on the ground with a thud.
The last thing she heard before blacking out were the terrified shrieks of the maid and the loud clatter of the pot being dropped.
